The 2012 US Open – Round 2 Recap

It goes to show you that even the pros can have terrible scores.  With the windy conditions at Olympic and the fast rolling dry greens, only three players in the entire field finished under par after two rounds at the U.S. Open.

Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, and David Toms all sit tied atop the leaderboard at (-1).  “Well, that wasn’t easy,” said Wood in reference to the tough track that frustrated so many pros over the past two days.  That is what ultra thick rough, ripping wind, tight fairways, and small greens will do – drive golfers crazy.

Recent Tour champion Matt Kuchar talked about the difficulty to just make par, “You have to hit it well just to have a good chance at a par. If you’re not hitting it well, you are hoping to make par, but it’s even surviving just to make bogey sometimes.”

Even with a +8 cut-line, world ranks 1 and 2 (Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy) will not be around to play this weekend — but either will Masters champion Bubba Watson and recent FedEx Classic winner Dustin Johnson.

It has been a tough run in the majors for No. 1 Donald. “I think I missed nine putts inside 10 feet (Thursday) and just couldn’t get the feel for the greens, the reads, the speed.”  Donald has struggled in major tournaments – missing cuts isn’t something new for him, “I’m trying to learn from it and come back stronger next time.”

After watching these two rounds, what do you think you would shoot at Olympic?  Even the average 85 scorer would end up with a 115 in my opinion…it’s just THAT rough out there.

Golficity’s Picks:  Tiger Woods T1 (-1), Jason Dufner T9 (+3), and Luke Donald (MC)
