5 Fun Facts About The President’s Cup

This week kicks off the highly anticipated President’s Cup with the OWGR 1-2 punch Jordan Spieth and Jason Day facing off along with five other players in the Top 10.  With so many participants playing at the top of their game, there is no denying how great it will be to see these guys battle it out again with action similar to what we saw during the 2015 FedExCup playoffs.

The President’s Cup has a format similar to the Ryder Cup, however, this time around it’s the USA against the World (excluding Europe).  While guys like Rory and Rose sit on the sidelines this week, we still have the opportunity to watch the rest of the world’s elite golfers duke it out on Jack’s Course in Korea.

Here are some fun facts even the die-hard pro golf fans need to know about this week’s event:

Ryder Cup Has More History

While most know the formats and pagentry to be similar between both the President’s and Ryder Cup, it’s also worth pointing out that the Ryder Cup has a ton more history (by no small margin).

The first Ryder Cup was played in 1927 in Massachusetts while the President’s Cup didn’t commence until 1994.  That’s right, the Ryder Cup will mark its 41st edition in 2016 while the President’s Cup will play only its 11th this week.

USA Dominates the President’s Cup (and Ryder Cup)

In its short existence, the USA has won the President’s Cup 8 times and only lost once. The other game resulted in a tie making the USA 8-1-1 in this event. Although most feel that the European’s dominate the Ryder’s Cup (because they won 8 of the last 10 editions), the USA has won 25 times over Europe/Great Britain’s 13 total.

Captain Jack

The Golden Bear held the job as Captain the most times in the USA’s history of the President’s Cup.  In his tenure, Jack was 2-1-1 as captain including the biggest ever President’s Cup defeat of 20 ½ – 11 ½ in 1998.

Next on the list is Fred Couples who wore the captain’s hat three straight times and had a record of 3-0.

Mickelson’s Perfect Attendance

Some might know this interesting bit of President’s Cup trivia but many think that Tiger played in the most events, or perhaps even Furyk.  However, Phil Mickelson has been on every President’s Cup team since its inception and who knows if this will be his last, but he’ll certainly be back as a Captain regardless.

In his time on Team USA, Phil has a total of 47 matches played (Tiger is next with 40), and his record is 20-16-11.  Despite having the most appearances in the President’s Cup, Tiger Woods has the best record at 24-15-1.

It’s All for Charity (and Bragging Rights)

The players who participate in the President’s Cup play for their country and a chance to bring the cup home with a victory.  No prize money is granted to any players on either side, but there are still plenty of perks that come with being on the team including travel, gear, food, and lodging.

Both the players and captains elect charities beforehand and that is where all of the proceeds generated from this event go to.  The first ten President’s Cups raised over $30 million for charities all over the world!

Side Note: The President’s Cup has the most appearances at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia (4 times) and exciting enough for us, the President’s Cup will soon be played in our own backyard at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey in 2017.
