Fantasy Golf Sleeper Report – 2021 Wells Fargo Championship
The 2021 Wells Fargo Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report
It’s the nightmare scenario for a golf bettor – a player winning on a rare week when they hadn’t backed them.
Sam Burns is a player we have been monitoring for a long time, and he has threatened to break his PGA TOUR title duck on a number of occasions.
That breakthrough finally came at the Valspar Championship, where he showed few nerves on his way to a comfortable three-shot victory over Keegan Bradley and co.
Burns eliminated the rash errors that can befall his game from time to time, and indeed as the finishing line appeared into view he seemed to get stronger as all around him fell short in their challenge.
A maiden title duly followed, and it was great for him and great for any bettor that took the 80/1 price available at the sportsbooks.
Speaking of long odds winners, it’s off to North Carolina this week for the Wells Fargo Championship.
The last time this event was held in 2019, there was a dramatic finale as the 300/1 Max Homa battled off the interests of Joel Dahmen (125/1) and Jason Dufner (150/1).
All three were in the mix at the top of the leaderboard heading into Sunday’s final round, and it was Dahmen who took the early initiative.
But his title push fell away as Homa, with a strong of birdies around the turn, asserted his authority. The 300/1 pick never looked back, overcoming a testing weather delay to secure his first PGA TOUR title.
After a series of tight and testing golf courses, it’s off to the rather more expansive Quail Hollow in Charlotte this week. While this is not an indiscriminate bomb track, it certainly rewards those who are long off the tee – this Par 71 measures more than 7,550 yards in length.
The tree-lined fairways will keep the most errant in check, but this is very much one of those ‘low driving accuracy, high GIR’ golf courses where scrambling into big greens is key.
Precision is required on approach, because these Bermuda greens – overseeded with Poa – are undulating and in some cases raised, so hitting accurate irons out of the rough stuff is a useful attribute.
While there is some rain in the forecast early in the week. Quail Hollow is usually a dry and fast course, and these greens run pretty quickly – there’s no room to hide here, and it is advantageous to hit soft wedges into the putting surfaces as opposed to long and skiddy irons.
