Fantasy Golf Sleeper Report – 2021 Wells Fargo Championship

The 2021 Wells Fargo Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report
It’s the nightmare scenario for a golf bettor – a player winning on a rare week when they hadn’t backed them.
Sam Burns is a player we have been monitoring for a long time, and he has threatened to break his PGA TOUR title duck on a number of occasions.
That breakthrough finally came at the Valspar Championship, where he showed few nerves on his way to a comfortable three-shot victory over Keegan Bradley and co.
Burns eliminated the rash errors that can befall his game from time to time, and indeed as the finishing line appeared into view he seemed to get stronger as all around him fell short in their challenge.
A maiden title duly followed, and it was great for him and great for any bettor that took the 80/1 price available at the sportsbooks.
Speaking of long odds winners, it’s off to North Carolina this week for the Wells Fargo Championship.
The last time this event was held in 2019, there was a dramatic finale as the 300/1 Max Homa battled off the interests of Joel Dahmen (125/1) and Jason Dufner (150/1).
All three were in the mix at the top of the leaderboard heading into Sunday’s final round, and it was Dahmen who took the early initiative.
But his title push fell away as Homa, with a strong of birdies around the turn, asserted his authority. The 300/1 pick never looked back, overcoming a testing weather delay to secure his first PGA TOUR title.
After a series of tight and testing golf courses, it’s off to the rather more expansive Quail Hollow in Charlotte this week. While this is not an indiscriminate bomb track, it certainly rewards those who are long off the tee – this Par 71 measures more than 7,550 yards in length.
The tree-lined fairways will keep the most errant in check, but this is very much one of those ‘low driving accuracy, high GIR’ golf courses where scrambling into big greens is key.
Precision is required on approach, because these Bermuda greens – overseeded with Poa – are undulating and in some cases raised, so hitting accurate irons out of the rough stuff is a useful attribute.
While there is some rain in the forecast early in the week. Quail Hollow is usually a dry and fast course, and these greens run pretty quickly – there’s no room to hide here, and it is advantageous to hit soft wedges into the putting surfaces as opposed to long and skiddy irons.
With a clear picture in mind, who has made our shortlist for the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship?

The 2021 Wells Fargo Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report
Keegan Bradley – 60/1 – Solo second at the Valspar Championship, that franks a formline from Keegan Bradley that also includes a top-10 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and top-30s at The Masters, the Honda Classic and THE PLAYERS Championship.
It was a phenomenal tee-to-green performance that led him to the brink of victory at Innisbrook, and that is when Bradley is really at it – we know that putting is an issue for him.
But his ability to work his ball into the right areas of the greens at Quail Hollow will be a significant advantage, and while his formline at the layout isn’t great his confidence levels right now must be sky high.
Tommy Fleetwood – 60/1 – When a golf tournament is decided by who can hit the ball straightest and longest, Tommy Fleetwood isn’t far from our thoughts.
The Englishman is an excellent driver of the ball, and the other facets of his game have been strong enough to take him to a top-10 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational just a matter of weeks ago.
A regular winner on the European Tour, Fleetwood hasn’t contended for a while but he certainly has the game to do it at Quail Hollow.
Stewart Cink – 80/1 – It would be absolutely extraordinary if a 47-year-old Stewart Cink could win three times on the PGA TOUR in a single season.
But let’s look at the facts, because if we suspend disbelief here’s a guy who is long off the tee, has been hitting the sweetest of irons and has been rolling the rock so well that he has bagged two titles this term.
Aside from a nothing effort here in 2018, Cink’s formline at Quail Hollow reads 20-23-15-9, so clearly there is a fondness for this track in the veins of the evergreen veteran.
Charl Schwartzel – 125/1 – It will be good to see Charl Schwartzel back to his best – the South African is an excellent player at his best.
Things are going well right now, and that strong team effort at the Honda Classic was sandwiched in-between T26 at The Masters and T21 last time out at the Valspar Championship.
With a top-10 at Quail Hollow, this is a layout that should reward Schwartzel’s silky smooth swing, and the fact that he is maintaining a busy schedule right now shows how much he is loving his golf right now.
Keith Mitchell – 140/1 – It’s a bomber’s course, it’s Bermuda and so it’s a potential Keith Mitchell week.
The big hitter has such a specific skillset that he can disappear for months on end before delivering a fine showing – T14 at the Sony Open and T17 at the Texas Open, after showing no form at all – is typical.
A formline of 8-34 at Quail Hollow shows an affinity for a player who can maximize the ultimate reward at a layout that will reward his bombs off the tee.
