Scheffler Claps Back at PGA-to-LIV Defectors, McIlroy Laments the Split
A recent theme at PGA Tour events has been getting current players’ thoughts on those who have departed for the LIV Golf tour. (And that’s sure to continue at Brookline for the U.S. Open next week now that the PGA Tour has indefinitely suspended the golfers who teed off for LIV in London today.)
This week, Rory McIlroy talked about how he believed this will not be good for the game of golf as a whole, but Scottie Scheffler took the most distinct shot.

While Talor Gooch does have a win on the PGA Tour this year, Scheffler’s comments reflect the popular sentiment that most of those choosing to play in the LIV Golf Invitational Series are players whose best days on the tour are behind them. Even Dustin Johnson, who Scheffler singled out, has struggled this season.
McIlroy didn’t beat around the bush when he said that this is purely a financial decision on the part of those playing in London this week.
🗣 “Any decision you make in your life that’s purely for money, usually doesn’t end up going the right way”

McIlroy went on to say:
“For the game in general, it’s just a shame that it’s going to fracture the game… If the general public is confused about who is playing where, and what tournament is on this week, and OK, he doesn’t get into these events – it just becomes so confusing. I think everything needs to try to become more cohesive, and I think it was on a pretty good trajectory until this happened.”
While Johnson, Phil Mickelson, and others are in London this week while McIlroy and Scheffler are in the Toronto area, they will all be in Massachusetts next week for the U.S. Open, where the press conferences will be “must-see TV.”
