Rory McIlroy was cruising through 27 holes at the Travelers Championship. Five under through his first 11 holes, he was looking at another round in the low sixties, before a quadruple bogey 8 on the 12th hole.

It included a penalty shot off the tee, a loose provisional, a bunker splash, a couple of chips and a tap in for the eight.

He also made a double bogey on 15. Without these two disaster holes, his round of 64 would have him tied for the lead.

Rory often has this ability to make golf look so easy, it is shocking when he has such loose swings in quick succession.

Despite this, he still signed for a level par round of 70, and is sat T7, six shots back of Xander Schauffele, with a pair of 63s to catapult him into the lead, followed by a group at -9 including Patrick Cantlay, defending champion Harris English,  Kevin Kisner and Cam Davis.
