Most golfers who end up turning pro learned the game in country clubs and other pristine conditions.

Not so for Open Championship winner Cameron Smith, and that may have actually helped his legendary putting game.

Speaking to the Courier-Mail in Australia, Smith’s father, Des, said that the rough conditions at his home course of Wantima Country Club helped him perfect that part of his game at a young age.

Des Smith said:

“We always joke he had a such a good short game because the golf course all those years ago was not in the shape it is in today, so he had a lot of tough lies which he had to overcome… If you could get out of the s—t around here, you could get out of anything.”

The 28-year-old winner of both the Open Championship and The Players Championship this year agreed.

“If you can play to your handicap at Wantima, you can play anywhere.”

Meanwhile, Smith followed up on the question he posed to himself after winning on Sunday at St. Andrews, wondering how many beers fit in the Claret Jug.

Year-round golf is a perk of living in Florida, where Chris moved from his native New York shortly after graduating from college. Chris has played some famous courses in the state, including Bay Hill in Orlando and Innisbrook in the Tampa Bay area, and next on his to-do list is the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass to take a crack at the famous island hole.
