Report: LIV Adds Promotion & Relegation to Ideas for 2023 and Beyond

LIV Golf has added another string to its bow in the form of relegation and qualifying criteria next year.

The report on SI.com explains that the bottom four players will be relegated from the 48-man field at the end of 2023, and four players will be added via qualifying.

Also added was a feature similar to the current FedEx Cup on the PGA Tour, where the top 125 players on the money list keep their card, and the others have to find a way of earning it back.

The equivalent in the LIV Series is the top 24 players in the 48-man field will earn points towards keeping their status for the following season. This relegation process adds some incentive to the rival Tour and helps to quash some of the claims that there is a lack of incentive for LIV participants, who receive astronomical payouts regardless of performance.

This way, the field stays somewhat refreshed, and there is an expected standard that will only improve as the quality of players jumping ship appears to be increasing.

Scheduled for 2024, LIV has added a ‘Promotions’ event, where exemptions for LIV qualification are assigned to major champions in the last five years, reigning amateur champions and anyone in the Top 75 on the OWGR.
