Will Zalatoris Apologizes for Mentor’s Expletive-Filled Twitter Rant; Justin Thomas Involved Too
Scott Fawcett, creator of Decade Golf and mentor to Will Zalatoris, took exception to some comments made by NBC golf commentators Dan Hicks and Brad Faxon during Zalatoris’ win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship two weeks ago.
Zalatoris famously missed some mid-range putts earlier this year that could’ve netted him two major wins, and he was dueling with Sepp Straka down the stretch last week in Memphis. Among the comments were that Zalatoris was “gifted the win” and that he had a “wobbly putter.”
Fawcett’s comments, which he deleted, were reportedly sent to Justin Thomas, who weighed in.
Hey Scott. Twitter saw your incredibly egregious and aggressive tweets. Congrats on your “win” but show some class and respect if you are as professional as you claim to be. Giving other coaches and those involved in golf a really bad look. Nobody likes a sore winner pic.twitter.com/AHeb0eldds

Fawcett isn’t the first and won’t be the last to lose his cool on Twitter and not think before hitting send.
Zalatoris has acknowledged the influence Fawcett has had on his game, but he distanced himself from him in a statement that partially read:
“Scott Fawcett is not a paid member of my team. I in no way condone or support anything that was said in those tweets. I personally reached out to Dan Hicks and Brad Faxon and echoed that I don’t condone what he said. Any interviews he’s given have been unauthorized.”
Meantime, Fawcett went into a story where he explained why he believes Thomas doesn’t care for him, which is worth a watch:
The end result: Fawcett did apologize to Hicks but not Faxon or Thomas.
