How bad does Scottish weather get?

Well, ask Alexander Knappe. Not a household name, but a man who gets paid to play golf nonetheless. The German has three wins on the Pro Golf Tour and four times on the Challenge Tour, including a win earlier this month.

He carded 52 strokes on the back nine at St. Andrews today. Knappe’s front 9 of level par saved his card from ending up in the nineties, signing for an 88 at the Old Course. The shotgun start meant that he started on 14, going 6,9,8 over the string of par 4s that were his opening three holes.

Horror stories are coming forward from over the pond, Tyrell Hatton reportedly flushing a 4 iron 150 yards into the teeth of the wind. Oliver Wilson carded back-to-back 9s on the 18th and 1st holes to derail his scorecard.

The pros are very happy to see their final hole of the day, but I sense Mr. Knappe may have to visit the driving range; more 25mph winds are forecast over the weekend!
