Matt Fitzpatrick has allegedly turned down an invitation to the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) awards due to golfers being consistently overlooked for the award. His management team confirmed that he has politely declined the invite.

Nick Faldo was the last golfer to claim the coveted trophy back in 1989, after his Masters win that he successfully defended the following year. Faldo was a fairly divisive character in the game, with a reputation for being robotic and single-minded in his approach to the game and the media, which is probably what made him one of Europe’s best-ever champions.

If Rory McIlroy has been overlooked for the award, it seems unlikely that Matt Fitzpatrick would hoist the trophy. Particularly this year, the personality of golfers has been evident due to the consistent press conferences on the LIV Golf breakaway Tour. Golf has probably bagged more column inches in 2022 than any previous year – with Tiger competing in three of the four majors, Phil Mickelson becoming unpopular while Rory and other big-name golfers regularly quizzed on the topic of LIV Golf.

Fitzpatrick is eyeing up a third win at the DP World Tour Championship this weekend, and he is right in contention. As a Major Champion, Ryder Cup winner, and World #9, he is officially a big hitter in the pro ranks, a veteran despite his boyish looks. He also received honorary lifetime membership this week from the DP World Tour. Despite these accolades, it appears SPOTY 2022 will not be within Fitzy’s targets for the end of the year!

Patrick joined us in May 2022 with a strong passion for the game and a writing style to match. He is a good golfer, originally from Cumbria in the UK, and now living in British Columbia, Canada. He focuses on writing opinion pieces while keeping up to date with LIV Golf, Tour events and Major championships, providing good insights into the professional game. His best golf memories are shooting 72 with a double on 18, running the Golf Society at Lancaster University, and steering them to the first ever Varsity win against rivals York. His favorite club is his Scotty Cameron Newport 2.0, and his favorite event is the Masters!
