Gary Player Puts The Masters Last in His List of Favorite Majors

Gary Player, a three-time green jacket winner, gives his take on the majors, and it is probably not what you expect it to be.

Player puts the Masters at the bottom of his list, an honest shocker given that he has hit the honorary tee shot at The Masters since 2012. However, this is what he had to say about the majors of golf when he chatted with Daily Mail. 

Player said:

“But, never mind the Masters, the Open is by far the greatest tournament on the planet, I rate the Open at one, the U.S. Open two, PGA three and Augusta four; Four marvelous tournaments. [The Masters is] the youngest of the majors. The others are steeped in tradition and history and they still have to catch up. Nothing comes to the top without time.”

The fiasco that happened with his son, Wayne, could have changed Gary’s viewpoint. There’s a good chance because something quite significant happened in 2021. His son promoted a golf ball company during Lee Elder’s ceremony, who was the first African-American to play in the Masters in 1975.

Wayne held the sleeve of golf balls right next to Elder to ensure the air time for the golf ball company. Augusta National acted swiftly by enacting a lifetime ban. Could this have swayed Gary’s opinion of one of the most coveted majors?
