Marc Leishman Commends LIV’s Appearance Down Under: ‘Special Week for Australian Golf’
Marc Leishman is one of two notable Aussies who defected from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf late last year following the conclusion of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, joining Cam Smith. After LIV’s first appearance “Down Under,” Leishman said this past weekend was a “special week, I think, for Australian golf.”
Leishman and Smith left the PGA Tour and went to LIV last year, citing the freedom the rival tour would give them. Smith has been vocal about homesickness and wanting to spend more time in his native Australia, and Leishman may have had the same reasons. Both are more than comfortable with their decision, despite the pushback, Leish said this week was huge for both Australian golf and LIV, which fellow Aussie Greg Norman heads.

Leishman said, via Golf Monthly:
“A special week, I think, for Australian golf, a special week for LIV. Me and Cam will have a bit of a hug later on tonight. If we weren’t, which we were, we were already very happy with our decisions, but this has certainly verified it, if it needed verifying, which I don’t think it did.”
Leishman went even as far as saying the tournament this past weekend had a “Major” feel to it, agreeing with playing partner Carlos Ortiz, who initially made the comments. “Even more than some Majors, and I feel the same way.”
Perhaps the most notable event of the weekend was the introduction of the LIV Watering Hole, which was likely inspired by the 16th at TPC Scottsdale, which is enclosed by stadium seating and can get rowdy during the February playing of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Chase Koepka aced the hole. Beer cans rained down, and celebrations yielded what was likely the most viral moment of LIV Golf’s second season.

The widely successful weekend for LIV in Australia may have catalyzed talks of two visits to the country next year. Cam Smith fueled rumors of the potential following the event yesterday.
Smith said:
“Yeah, it’s been, I guess, spoken about for a few months now. I’m not sure how far along we are. I really stay out of those conversations, to be honest. Part of my reason to play was to have an event here, and if we got two, I think that would make so much difference.”
