Jason Day Switches From P7MC to P7TW Irons for U.S. Open
Jason Day is making an equipment change with his irons this week for the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, going from the P7MCs that he used to win the AT&T Byron Nelson last month to the Big Cat-inspired P7TWs.
Citing more spin with the P7TWs, it seems Day was not necessarily looking for something that launched as low for this week’s tournament.

“They’re literally two days old…It’s not like I wasn’t happy with (TaylorMade P7MC) irons; I obviously just won with them, but I noticed they were coming out a bit low, and the spin was low. The P7TWs spin more.”

He said (via PGATour.com) on Tuesday when asked about the change:
“They’re literally two days old. It’s not like I wasn’t happy with the irons. I obviously just won with them, but I noticed they were coming out a bit low, and the spin was low. The P7TWs spin more.”
Sticking with the KBS Tour C-Tape 125+ shafts, the TWs offer slightly more spin and workability compared to the P7MCs, which have perimeter weighting that adds forgiveness.
Of course, a ball striker of Day’s quality does not need too much forgiveness, but more spin and a higher ball flight were sought after for this week’s event.
Day is not the only Tour player to utilize Tiger’s custom-designed irons, which you can pick up for $1999.99 on TaylorMade’s website. World no. 1 Scottie Scheffler has notably used them for a few seasons.
The TWs offer lofts that are 1 degree stronger than the P7MCs:
- 3i – 21°
- 4i – 24°
- 5i – 27°
- 6i – 31°
- 7i – 35°
- 8i – 39°
- 9i – 43°
- PW – 47°
They also feature a D3 swing weight, which differs slightly from the D2 of the P7MC.
With the difficult course conditions, players are pulling out all the stops to compete this weekend at LACC. Day will look to improve from his U.S. Open-best 2nd/T2 finishes at the 2011 and 2013 events.
