Ryder Cup Captain, Who Once Called for a Boycott if LIV Players Returned, Now Asking for Patience

Among the fiercest critics of LIV Golf was Davis Love III, who happens to be the U.S. Ryder Cup team captain for this fall’s event.

After previously calling for a player boycott if LIV players were allowed back on the PGA Tour, Love III is now saying that players should be patient while the deal among the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is hashed out.

In an open letter to PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan—who remains on the mend following a “medical situation” just over a week ago—along with players, sponsors, and staff of the PGA Tour, Love III said he’s confident that the leadership will do what’s right for the players who remained on the PGA Tour.

But while he calls for patience, Love III says he expects that players will have input into the final decision on this deal.

Love III wrote:

“I am confident and trust that any decisions—in the future as in the past—will have the same due process and player input. Jay, as you have said, Rules made by the Players, for the Players. If we are patient and work together, we will achieve the best result for our Tour.”

The status of LIV Golf players regarding this fall’s Ryder Cup remains murky. While Monahan and DP World Tour commissioner Keith Pelley have said that LIV players will be ineligible, nothing official has been ruled—and Brooks Koepka may automatically qualify due to his PGA Championship victory and strong finishes at the other two majors so far.

In addition, Henrik Stenson was the original captain of Team Europe, but he was stripped of that post when he joined LIV last summer.
