The PGA Tour Could Lose Another One of its Notable Events

The PGA Tour is on the brink of losing another longtime sponsor of one of its notable events, as it appears the Farmers Insurance Open could be nearing its final time as an event on the schedule.

There has already been one event that has lost its sponsor, as last year, Wells Fargo announced it would no longer sponsor the event at Quail Hollow that it has held for decades.

Regardless if you want to point the finger at the LIV controversy, the simple fact is that the PGA Tour has been passing the bill to its sponsors for events, despite not justifying the increased expense with, among other things, improved ratings. Nobody wants to pay $5 for something that cost $3 a year ago.

Such was the feeling of Wells Fargo when they decided they would not continue to sponsor their annual event hosted by Quail Hollow. It seems that another longtime sponsor is taking an even more drastic approach.

As many astute viewers noticed this past weekend, Rickie Fowler was missing two of his flagship sponsors—Farmers Insurance and Rocket Mortgage—while playing Kapalua. But when asked by reporters about the blank spaces, Fowler confirmed that he is no longer partnered with Farmers, explaining, “My contract was up, and I was told they weren’t looking to renew or extend. It was a good fit with them taking over at Torrey, a tournament I loved and was closest to where I grew up. I loved doing the fun commercials with them over the years, it was a great partnership, and it was their decision to scale back.”

With the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines only weeks away, it is certain that more fuel will get poured on this fire, as this pivot may not be isolated to player sponsorships. The recent, growing rumor is that CEO Raul Vargas, who took the reigns during fall 2022, isn’t a golfer and is trying to implement some very aggressive cost-cutting measures—approximately 11% of Farmers employees were laid off during August 2023. That, sadly, may just be the beginning, as there are some rumors that this may be the last (or perhaps penultimate) Farmers Insurance Open.

While one sponsor exiting may be an aberration or isolated event unique to that sponsor, two’s company and it seems likely that things will need to change at the Tour to ensure that it doesn’t grow into a sponsor firesale.
