These are the stories that we love.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard a Phil Mickelson story that isn’t salacious. Or from writer Alan Shipnuck.

Instead, this one comes courtesy of new NBC golf broadcaster Kevin Kisner, who relayed an all-timer from the 2017 Presidents Cup on The Smylie Show on SiriusXM.

Kisner said that he was paired with Mickelson for that event because Lefty requested the pairing to captain Steve Stricker based on advice received by an “astronomer.” (We assume Kisner meant astrologer.)

Kisner said that he wouldn’t be able to play with Mickelson, but Stricker told him, “’Well, Phil has an astronomer that graded all the two teams, and you got the highest grade. Just told us that he wasn’t playing with anyone but you.”

Kisner told Stricker that was “the weirdest sh– he ever heard in his life,” but he went on to team with Lefty.

Then, when the two talked before their round, Mickelson told Kisner:

“‘Every time I hit a shot, I need you to face me with your belly because all your energy comes from your belly, and I can pull your energy before every shot.’”

Kisner went along with it, and the duo was 2-0-1 that week in helping the United States team to victory.

The best part? Mickelson later confirmed the tale.
