Update: 1/25 9:44 a.m. – Final paragraph updated to reflect accuracy. Maxfli has held several professional sponsorships, this is their first with an LPGA Tour pro, however.

The golf ball is the only piece of equipment that is utilized on every shot and, therefore, it has to be very versatile—high, penetrating/lower-spin flight with driver fairways, hybrids, and long irons, but low-flying with spin on short irons and wedges—and durable. A ball that is incompatible with a golfer can create widespread problems, causing you to fight with nearly every club in your bag.

So it was a bit surprising this morning with LPGA Lexi Thompson announced that she would no longer be using Bridgestone—most well known as Tiger Woods’ ball of choice—and, instead, would be partnering with Maxfli, a brand that was previously owned by TaylorMade but sold to Dick’s Sporting Goods in 2008.

For those who recognize the Maxfli name, you’re likely associating it with a lesser-quality ball that isn’t comparable to the Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, and Bridgestone tour options. But last year, Maxfli released three tour balls—the Tour, Tour X, and Tour S—that outperformed their reputation.

While Lexi’s change from Bridgestone is noteworthy enough, what perhaps gets lost in that noise is that she is the first female professional golfer that Maxfli has partnered with. Many other pro players on the PGA Tour, however, have had Maxfli partnerships, one of which being Lee Trevino.

As a result, this clearly demonstrates that Dick’s is taking the Maxfli product lineup very seriously. Whether that means other golfers will be putting a Maxfli remains to be seen, but the immediate question will be how Lexi’s game responds to using a Maxfli in competition play.
