Rory McIlroy Fires Back at Talor Gooch with Legendary Response to ‘Asterisk’ Remarks

Rory McIlroy respectfully rebutted comments made by 2023 LIV Golf Champion Talor Gooch, who stated yesterday that, if McIlroy were to complete the Career Grand Slam this April at Augusta National, there should be an asterisk next to his name.

Gooch, who dominated the LIV Golf season last year with numerous victories, will not be at Augusta National this year to compete in the Masters, and due to his, and many others absence, he believes there should be a distinction between this year’s winner and past champions of the Green Jacket.

However, McIlroy’s response was cool, calculated, and respectful. While Gooch’s frustration may be cast in the direction of those who will play, it perhaps should be in another direction: at himself.

McIlroy narrowed in on that point during a press conference today. Rory was sure to bring up the fact that other LIV Golfers, who are not past champions of the event, were able to either qualify or gain invites to Augusta for the April playing of the Masters.

Joaquin Niemann is one of them, and McIlroy brought up that point during his presser today:

“Joaquin Niemann got an invite, and I played with Joaquin in Dubai a few weeks ago, and he went down to Australia and won, he was in Oman last week, you know. He’s been chasing his tail around the world to try to get this…either play his way into Augusta or show enough form to warrant an invite. I don’t know if the same can be said for Talor.”

Niemann was granted a special invitation earlier this month, and accepted it, which will put him in the field at the Masters.

Patrick Reed, Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, and Phil Mickelson are among the past champions who are LIV Golf defectors who will play at Augusta this year. Brooks Koepka is one of the non-champions who will play in this year’s tournament, which was earned through winning the 2023 PGA Championship.

Gooch had a phenomenal year last year on the LIV Golf schedule, but his lack of an offer could perhaps be due to his own accord.

McIlroy’s response also showed less spitefulness than past reactions relating to LIV Golfers, showing a tremendous turnaround in attitude compared to just a few months ago. The Northern Irishman said earlier this year that the LIV Golf-PGA Tour drama had worn on him. He removed himself from the PGA Tour’s Player’s Board, and chose to take a step back from issues with LIV, which is apparent in his tone.

It is refreshing to see Rory take a new approach to conflicts, especially those that could challenge the credibility of his accomplishments.

However, McIlroy will go down as one of the greatest to ever play the game, and the opinions of other players will likely not deter him from knowing that he has inspired many to play or even watch golf.

When he isn't golfing, he is probably thinking about golfing, but he might be watching other sports, writing, or playing poker.
