Viktor Hovland is not happy with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and how he has handled negotiations with the Public Investment Fund, or how he announced the Tour’s intent to merge with the Saudis last year.

It is no secret that Monahan’s announcement sent players, fans, and anyone else involved with golf for a bit of a surprise. After months of mud slinging efforts from both sides, the Tour, which had put itself on a proverbial pedestal, backtracked in what was seemingly an overnight move by announcing intentions to merge.

Ultimately, everyone is set to win because of it. However, there are still a lot of questions yet to be answered.

Viktor Hovland took offense to how it was handled, the lack of transparency, and how the mistakes have never been owned up to:

“There were some things that were said that have been walked back on & then things that have been very contradictory. As a leader of an organization, I will want a person like that to take some ownership and say, hey, we made a couple of mistakes, but this is how we’re going to rectify it, instead of kind of sweeping it under the rug, which I felt like has been done to a certain degree.”

Hovland has gone from PGA Tour newbie, to fan favorite, to weekly threat to win. His words undoubtedly have influence, and one thing he believes the players deserve is a bit of transparency with how things have been handled. Who could blame him.

Hovland continued:

“So I don’t mind people making mistakes. We all make mistakes. But I think when you make a mistake you got to own up to it and say, hey, we’re trying to do better here, and this is how we’re going to do it.”

Hovland is paired with Rory McIlroy and Jordan Speith for the first two days of this week’s PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

When he isn't golfing, he is probably thinking about golfing, but he might be watching other sports, writing, or playing poker.
