2024 Butterfield Bermuda Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

Some players fumble their way to the finishing line on Sunday, and others burst through the tape like proven champions.

Austin Eckroat took the latter route to glory at the World Wide Technology Championship, posting a remarkable eleven birdies on his way to a round of 63….enough to stave off the chasing pack and land his second PGA TOUR title.

Eckroat once again showed his precise ball-striking class from tee-to-green at El Cardonal, but it was the manner in which he spiked on the greens – making putt after putt – that ultimately took him to victory.

A winner of the birdie-tastic WWT Championship, Eckroat prevailed in more challenging conditions at the Cognizant Classic earlier this year. That versatility is an undoubted mark of his class.

The PGA TOUR roadshow moved onto its next country this week at the Bermuda Championship, where the players at both ends of the FedEx Fall spectrum will have their penultimate opportunity to pick up much-needed ranking points.

And it’s those with something to play for that are most of interest this week, because they will have the drive to grind it out in conditions that could best be surprised as ‘taxing’.

Wind speeds of 23mph have been forecast, and that’s just the basic wind – gusts at the localized level will probably exceed that. It could be a bumpy ride, and you wonder if those playing without pressure will really have the motivation to fight it out.

Strong winds at easy courses aren’t typically a problem, but scores of -15 have been enough to win this event in a breeze, so clearly there’s an emphasis on tight ball control, rather than making birdies right out of the gate.

Royal Port GC, the host venue, is a short Par 71 at which the three Par 5s all measure less than 550 yards, and so the kernel of the winning score will be made here. Mind you, staying out of trouble on the three toughest Par 3s – in each in that 200-230 yard range – reveals how important long iron play will be this week.

The course undulates through two contrasting landscapes, with half of the holes played along the coastline – think rugged, exposed resort golf – and the other half more inland on a typical tree-lined layout.

The Bermuda greens are a decent size, so really the complications are finding the fairway off the tee – not easy in such a strong wind, and then getting your ball close enough on approach, while fighting the breeze, to set up birdie looks.

This won’t be an easy assignment for what is a spectacularly weak field; the likes of Seamus Power, MacKenzie Hughes, Maverick McNealy, and Ben Griffin have all been priced at lower than 20/1 by the sportsbooks….it really is that kind of week.

But such volatile conditions can lead to long odds winners….and that’s where our sleeper shortlist for the 2024 Bermuda Championship could come in very handy.

Greyson Sigg – 50/1 – With three rounds of 66 or lower at Royal Port GC, Greyson Sigg certainly knows his way around this layout.

He’s taken a few weeks off lately, and there’s no harm in heading into what is likely to be a tough assignment fresh and ready to go.

Before putting his feet up, Sigg’s formline read 23-11-MC-4, so there’s certainly enough encouragement there to suggest that this accurate sort, who seems to save his best golf for these coastal tracks, can go well once more.

Michael Kim – 55/1 – As Michael Kim pointed out to his Twitter followers this past week, he’s been one of the very best players on the PGA TOUR this year in the 225-yard range.

It’s a skillset that holds plenty of weight at Royal Port GC, where the three Par 5s and the trio of the tougher Par 3s all rely on precision on approach in this sort of yardage bucket.

After a front nine of 30 on Friday, Kim actually held a share of the lead at the WWT Championship, so his game is definitely close to being in winning shape, and a bogey-free final round of 67 suggests he signed off in fine style in Mexico.

Wesley Bryan – 80/1 – Currently sitting 128 in the FedEx Fall standings, there’s a chance for Wesley Bryan to lock up a PGA TOUR card with another strong showing this week.

The fall has shown plenty of encouragement to his game, with T13 at the Procore Championship, and T21 at the Black desert Championship, followed by T6 at the WWT Championship last time out.

With so much to play for, and the necessary form in the locker, we can expect another strong showing from Bryan this week.

Dylan Wu – 80/1 – With 24 birdies and an eagle last week, Dylan Wu’s game coordinated to the point that he was able to break par with ease.

The assignment will be somewhat different this week, but the confidence of that T14 finish in Mexico will provide this player – who currently sits an agonizing 126 in the FedEx Fall standings – with a welcome boost.

His history on TOUR offers little nuggets of encouragement too, from form shown on the notoriously windy Florida Swing, to a T2 finish in the Korn Ferry Tour’s Bahamas Great Exuma Classic.

Garrick Higgo – 90/1 – The South African got better round by round at El Cardonal last week, closing out his effort with a 64 to finish in T6.

It’s his only top-ten of the season, aside from T4 at the Zurich Classic, but this former winner on the PGA TOUR has already shown plenty of capability at Royal Port, where in eight rounds Higgo has already fired two at 66 or better.

Sat 138th in the FedEx Fall standings, Higgo has two events to save his PGA TOUR card….he’ll be desperate to break the back of that effort at a layout that he knows well.
