LIV Announces Its First Equipment Sponsors

Earlier this year, a podcast “leaked” that included Jon Rahm announcing the LIV team he captains, Legion XIII, would be sponsored by Callaway Golf. This was a pretty significant statement given that, as of that moment, no LIV team had partnered with any equipment manufacturer.

Yes, numerous teams had struck deals with various apparel sponsors, but an equipment sponsorship would signal that the “stick” associated with LIV had finally disappeared.

That podcast, however, was quickly taken down, and no formal announcement came from LIV, Legion XIII or Callaway, suggesting that Rahm’s statements were, perhaps, premature.

Notwithstanding the silence and LIV holding its first 2025 event, one team has finally “crossed the rubicon” and secured its first team equipment sponsor.

The “leak” has proven to be true and Callaway will be the first LIV team sponsor, as they will be backing Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII.

It is unclear how this will affect the other Legion XIII members (Tyrrell Hatton, for example, is a PING staffer), but what is clear is that Captain Rahm has been hard at work investing into his team, as this is their second significant sponsor this year—Greyson announced that it would be Legion XIII’s apparel partner earlier this year.

While no one should expect that the other LIV teams will announce similar equipment partnerships by the end of the week, I do not think it is unreasonable to think that the other OEMs are rounding up their top brass and having serious discussions about which team to partner with, rather than whether or not they should be partnering with anyone.

It’s worth noting that while the Callaway-Legion announcement is significant in itself, it signals something else that’s, perhaps, more significant. The ever-growing number of sponsors, regardless how big or small, signals that despite whatever the status of the PGA TOUR-DP World Tour-PIF negations, LIV is here to stay (or, at least, for the foreseeable future).
