Justin Thomas Went to Who For Putting Help?!

Justin Thomas admitted that he truly needed some help with his flatstick in hopes of recovering his game. But who he went to for advice might shock you.

Thomas won this past weekend at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, his first win in nearly three years, as he last won the PGA Championship at Southern Hills in 2022. The drought included some incredibly low points, like missing the FedEx Cup Playoffs altogether in 2023.

His putting was in need of a rebuild. It had completely abandoned him. At the end of the 2024 season, Thomas called Xander Schauffele, who went on an absolute tear last year, winning two Majors, for some assistance:

“As funny as it is, a huge help…I called Xander [Schauffele] at the end of last year, because I think he is one of the best putters…but I was like, ‘Can I just pick your brain for like two or three hours?’ So he came out with me and he was just asking me a bunch of different questions, and I mean, you guys obviously know Xander. But he doesn’t leave any box unchecked.”

Thomas went on to describe Schauffele’s attention to detail, stating that Xander said to him, “If it involves getting better at golf, I’ve done it or tried it.”

In reality, it seemed to come down to something that we all do: overthink. Schauffele encouraged JT to stop trying so hard and be less experimental with his stroke, sticking to what has worked for him in the past.

Thomas performed exceptionally well at the RBC Heritage in terms of putting. In 2023 and 2024, Thomas ranked 135th and 174th in Strokes Gained: Putting, respectively.

So far this year, he is 24th.
