LIV Golf Mexico saw Joaquin Niemann win his fifth title in the league this weekend, tied for the most in LIV History with Brooks Koepka.

But Niemann’s win was more significant in the broader spectrum of things compared to normal tournaments.

The Chilean also locked up an exemption to play in the U.S. Open at Oakmont in early June, becoming the first LIV player to earn a spot through the USGA’s new terms that opened pathways for players in the league to play in its tournament.

Niemann’s lead in the LIV Golf standings is large enough that he will be one of three players to be exempt for the U.S. Open through points. The other two are yet to be determined.

Niemann’s win is a continuation of his good play this year. However, he has yet to lock up a top 10 in a Major Championship, something that has been his greatest point of criticism thus far.
