ECCO BIOM H5: Polarizing Style, Absolute Comfort
Playing Through: ECCO’s BIOM H5 are some of the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. The ECCO-TEX waterproof membrane keeps your feet dry, while the Performance Leather and BIOM NATURAL MOTION technology keep every step comfortable. That said, the styling is a bit polarizing (be ready for the Dad Joke) and the H5’s spikeless design may ask you to tradeoff traction for comfort.
ECCO Golf is a premium shoe manufacturer. They are one of very few footwear manufacturers that own the tanneries that provide the leather for their shoes, including the BIOM H5.

For those unfamiliar with the Biom H5, they are ECCO’s most recently released spikeless golf shoe and is designed with nature in mind.
Starting from the sole, the H5 features TERRA TRACTION SYSTEM that looks to promote stability and traction. If you’re thinking there’s something familiar about the design, the TERRA TRACTION SYSTEM takes visual styling cues—which might be polarizing for some (sorry, shameless Dad Joke)—from the rugged terrain found in the Scottish Highlands.
The sole wraps around the base of the H5 and combines with NATURAL MOTION technology, which provides comfort and dynamic performance, and the ECCO-TEX waterproof membrane that keeps your feet dry. Finally, your foot slides into ECCO’s Performance Leather and one-piece engineered knit sock.

Consistent with their description, the BIOM H5 are incredibly comfortable. The knit-sock wraps comfortably around your ankle, while the rest of your foot rests comfortable inside the ECCO-TEX leather and sits onto the NATURAL MOTION insole and base. All of these provide an experience that pleasurable with every step that you take. Unlike waterproofing of yesteryear, the ECCO-TEX leather doesn’t turn the inside of the H5 into a sauna and turn your foot into a sweaty, smelly mess. Instead, your foot breaths while staying dry—whether that means protecting against morning dew or steady rain storms.
Having walked my home course numerous times, which features plenty of elevation changes over the first few holes followed by numerous, long holes, I was thoroughly impressed with how comfortable the H5 were directly out of the box. Despite having not played golf during the NY-area offseason, my feet never cramped or blistered while walking those early season rounds and reminiscing about how much I love this game.

That said, the BIOM H5 isn’t my top 2025 golf shoe. As a former baseball player, I prefer a shoe that reminds me of cleats; shoes that combine a structurally rigid construction and aggressive traction. It just lets me feel like I’m connected to the ground and able to aggressively swing without concern of my foot moving around.
My spiked-shoe-bias was confirmed while playing in the BIOM H5, particularly on some of those damper, early morning rounds where I was putting through the dew. The BIOM H5’s traction pattern is more outdoor sneaker than golf shoe, and the upper section has some extra space that lets your foot comfortable sit inside. That combination meant no matter how tight I tied my laces, the H5 allowed my foot to twist and slip while taking some aggressive swings from the tee box, fairways or rough.
That said, the H5 is super comfortable (easily and significantly more comfortable than my regular, spiked shoes, which might make it a superior option for golfers who regularly walk and don’t require a more aggressive traction pattern.

While I’m going to remain true to my spiked-shoe preference, the BIOM H5 is a great shoe and something I’ll continue to wear while hitting balls on the sim or from matts on the driving range. There is no denying that it’s an incredibly comfortable shoe. So if you happen to be a person that likes spikeless designs and prioritizes comfort, there is no doubt in my mind that you’ll love ECCO’s BIOM H5.
