Viktor Hovland revealed a shocking revelation he had regarding the drama between the PGA TOUR and LIV Golf.

It turns out, the Norwegian who won the 2023 FedEx Cup does not think the PGA TOUR handled the LIV Golf turmoil well. He would not have handled it in the same manner.

Hovland has had some offers from LIV Golf, but he has declined them due to what is likely a focus on legacy and not necessarily excessive financial stability. That conclusion can be reached with how Hovland believes the PGA TOUR went wrong in its response to LIV’s existence (via Fried Egg Podcast):

“Everything could get better for sure. Especially the messaging the last couple of years…certainly against LIV Tour emerging.”

Hovland admits he was “a little surprised” with how the TOUR handled LIV’s emergence. He says it focused on the wrong things, instead playing into the hand of LIV and not necessarily with what makes the TOUR so unique: legacy.

He went on:

The PGA Tour didn’t really go with the best strategy. They had leverage—historical events, tradition. They should’ve honed in on that. Playing the money game… it’s tough to compete against the Saudis. Back at the Travelers, it’s a great event. You remember that shot, that champion. That’s what makes the PGA Tour. That’s why people tune in.”

The TOUR has a rich legacy and history that includes the mystique and prestige of some of its biggest events. Instead of focusing on what players could be winning and earning with their history, it instead tried to play a game that, like Hovland said, is tough to win against the Saudis. A money fight against them is never going to go your way.

However, even he knows he could be wrong:

“It’s probably something I should learn more about before I speak. But I will say my focus is on growing the Tour, making it better, and really moving on from the position of strength that it has”.
