BMW Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

With three holes to play at the FedEx Cup St. Jude Championship on Sunday, it’s possible that Justin Rose hadn’t even contemplated lifting the trophy. His playing partner, Tommy Fleetwood, was two shots clear with an easy Par 5 ahead, where he was expected to stabilize or even extend his advantage.

But Fleetwood, despite hitting a perfect drive on 16, hit his approach into the grandstand, fluffed his third shot, and only just got up and down for par. Rose, meanwhile, made birdie at 16 and 17, where Fleetwood again made a hash of his approach shot before missing a par putt.

In the space of a few minutes, he’d gone from favorite to lift the trophy to needing a two-shot swing on the last – Rose, utilizing all his experience, made par to squeeze out his playing partner and book a playoff with J.J. Spaun. They shared the first two extra holes, before Rose’s clutch putt on the third handed him a 12th PGA TOUR title – he’s the first non-American winner on the TOUR aged 45+ in over a decade.

Rose, Spaun, and Fleetwood are all guaranteed their place in the season-ending TOUR Championship… but who will join them there? Most of the PGA TOUR’s biggest names will be heading to Caves Valley this week in a bid to finish inside the top 30 of the FedEx Cup standings, however there will be some notable absentees.

Jordan Spieth, Wyndham Clark, and Tony Finau are amongst those that missed out on qualifying for the BMW Championship, so they will be watching on from home like the rest of us.

But what they can expect to see from Caves Valley, which is found in the Ownings Mills area of Maryland? The answer, at the time of writing, is who knows: not even the PGA TOUR seems to know if the track will play as a Par 70 or Par 72 this week, and hadn’t responded to our question at the time of publishing. Caves Valley played as a Par 72 for this event in 2021, but it was simply too easy: Patrick Cantlay and Bryson DeChambeau topped the leaderboard with a score of -27, while all 70 players (as it was back then) ended the week under par.

So we think that the layout will be changed to a long old Par 70, with two of the holes that previously played as Par 5s being switched to 500+ yard Par 4s. Look out for official confirmation of that. Either way, Caves Valley is a long old stretch, with driving distance and natural length on approach both very helpful in 2021, alongside solid Bentgrass putting. We expect no different in 2025, either.

Normally, we post picks at 50/1 or longer in this column. But given the reduced field size of 50 players, and the fact that there’s some intriguing picks at 45/1 this week, we’re just going to open up our BMW Championship 2025 sleeper shortlist up a little to try and land a late season winner.

Hideki Matsuyama – 45/1 – Although some driving issues have crept into Hideki Matsuyama’s game, those should not be too badly exposed by Caves Valley. So we can take heart from the fact that the Japanese ace is, otherwise, in decent fettle. He’d gained strokes on the field on approach in each of his prior five starts to the St. Jude – including +1.89 per round, on average, at the U.S. Open.

Matsuyama then ranked eighth in a classy field for SG: Approach at TPC Southwind, which allied to his inconsistent – but elite when firing – short game, certainly makes him an intriguing play this week.

Chris Gotterup – 45/1 – There isn’t a great deal of subtlety to Chris Gotterup’s game, which largely revolves around hitting the ball as far as he possibly can before, hopefully leaving himself an angle into the green with short iron or wedge. But his win at the Scottish Open confirms that there’s some imagination to his craft, particularly around the greens, and so Gotterup’s breakout year has been reflective of his talent, and not just a stroke of luck.

He should get full value for his skillset at Caves Valley, where he will be allowed to let rip off the tee, so we’re hoping that last week’s dud show at TPC Southwind was an aberration – before that, Gotterup had landed the biggest title of his career and then a top-three in a major, so underestimate him at your peril.

Sepp Straka – 45/1 – The key to winning low-scoring Par 70 events is to make as many birdies on the Par 4 holes as possible, which means that elite iron and wedge play is necessary.

Which brings us rather nicely to Sepp Straka, for whom that it is a speciality – a skillset that has led the Austrian to two PGA TOUR titles in 2025 so far. Intriguingly, Straka has played well at venues that Cantlay and DeChambeau love, such as Bay Hill and Muirfield Village, so perhaps there’s a line to be drawn there too.

Harris English – 60/1 – It was somewhat telling of Harris English’s renaissance in 2025 that he was able to finish solo second at the British Open in July… despite having never really shown any fondness for Links golf previously.

It brought his tally to three finishes of T12 or better in majors alone this year; a year which has also delivered a win at the Farmers Insurance Open and a host of eye-catching efforts in Signature Events. A poor effort at the St. Jude was fair enough – English hadn’t played for three weeks prior, but we can expect more from him at a venue where he carded a round of 65 on his last visit.

Sam Stevens – 110/1 – The fact that Sam Stevens sits 31st in the FedEx Cup standings, despite his inconsistency, is evidence of how his performance levels can spike. Two second-placed finishes and a third in 2025 have done the spade work for his success in the playoffs, and shows that when everything comes together, Stevens is a PGA TOUR winner in the making. His close shave with victory at Torrey Pines shows he’s comfortable in tests of distance and length, so can Stevens produce a shock for the ages this week at Caves Valley?
