Three Overlooked Mid-Tier Fantasy Picks for The Masters

Sure everyone gets excited for major tournaments, but fantasy golf fans are in for a little extra treat this week with DFS prize pool going through the roof for the 2016 Masters. With all the hype surrounding this week’s $4 million contest on DraftKings it should come as no surprise that more people than ever are looking to gain a little edge for a chance to cash in big time.
Earlier this week we gave you our top 7 picks to win The Masters as well as our Tuesday Sleeper Report for more solid selections coming off of 50/1 or greater Vegas Odds (if you haven’t checked out or sample DraftKings Masters lineups, Premium Members can find them here).
Now that the pairings and tee-times have been announced, we want to uncover three solid, yet largely overlooked and undervalued mid-tier picks to help you lock in those winning lineups this week. For those of you who are new to fantasy golf, the mid-tier bracket consists of players with salaries of $7,000 up to $8,800 this week and you’ll be surprised with the level of talent in that range.
With that said, let’s dive right in to three of our favorite underrated mid-tier fantasy golf selections for the 2016 Masters Tournament.
Danny Willett
Not many fantasy players are giving Willett enough love this week due largely we suspect to his $8,000 DraftKings price tag. Although we agree that the $7500-$7700 range would be a better fit for Danny his performances in the big events with all-star lineups makes him worth the extra salary spend.
He has four starts on the PGA TOUR this season and in order of most recent, he’s finished T28, T22, T3, T3. Willett a solid player all-around with excellent ball striking and has a very strong putter (as you can see in his key stats below). The good thing about Willett is that not many will opt to pick him this week, so if you do and he performs as well as we think he will, it could give you a leg up on the pack.
Danny Willett’s key indicators this week:
- DraftKings Salary: $8,000
- Putting Rating: 8.3
- Accuracy Rating: 6.6
- Short Game Rating: 6.8
- Power Rating: 6.70
- FPPG: 90.00
- GPFP: 72.00
- PPFP: 111.11
Brandt Snedeker
Because we haven’t heard his name mentioned much recentl, a lot of people are forgetting that Brandt currently ranks 3rd in the FedExCup race 20 events into the season. The reason for his high FedExCup rank should be obvious. Sneds has four Top 10 finishes this year including a win, a 2nd, and a 3rd place finish with 9 of 11 cuts made in 2016.
Snedeker ranks 15th in Scrambling and 8th in Total Putting on the PGA TOUR and has three Top 19 finishes at Augusta since 2011 including his T6 in 2013. Look for him to be right in the mix come Sunday even against the world’s most elite field.
- DraftKings Salary: $8,500
- Putting Rating: 8.3
- Accuracy Rating: 6.6
- Short Game Rating: 7.0
- Power Rating: 6.40
- FPPG: 69.55
- GPFP: 65.38
- PPFP: 130.02
J.B. Holmes
The Holmes WD last week at his Shell Houston Open title defense was labeled as being due to a “shoulder injury” but we’ve seen guys feed the media these blanket injury statements for other reasons. We get it, J.B. simply chose to rest his body for Augusta which is why he opted out of the SHO last week and we don’t believe his injury to be significant enough to effect his performance at The Masters this week.
J.B. can certainly blast the ball as evidenced by his Driving Distance stats (good for 2nd on the PGA TOUR) but he’s also not a one trick pony, which is made clear by his 37th place ranking in Strokes Gained: Tee-To-Green. A bargain at $7,400, Holmes could provide your roster with some solid fantasy points given his incredible distance and Par 5 birdie conversions.
He’s had a solid season so far with two Top 10 finishes and will be looking to shake things up this week at Augusta National.
- DraftKings Salary: $7,400
- Putting Rating: 8.3
- Accuracy Rating: 7.0
- Short Game Rating: 6.2
- Power Rating: 9.7
- FPPG: 79.14
- GPFP: 100.51
- PPFP: 130.02
