THE PLAYERS Championship is one of the biggest events on the PGA TOUR that isn’t a major championship.  While most fans will tune in to watch the best golfers in the world play, they aren’t the only ones that are competing on the course.

On Wednesday caddies of all competing players were invited to the iconic 17th hole for a friendly closest to the pin challenge.  The competition benefits the Bruce Edwards Foundation, which is made in the name of Tom Watson’s former caddie who lost a battle with ALS. A nd this year’s competitors certainly put on a show.

The most entertaining shot came from James Hahn’s caddie, Mark Urbanek, who decided that using a club was for amateurs.  Instead of taking one of teeing up like everyone else, Urbanek decided to throw a bomb over the water and onto the island green.  And the most impressive part was that he was able to stick the throw within 20 feet of the cup.  I’d like to see Tony Romo do that.

Perhaps Urbanek was trying to avoid a disappointing shot that would’ve caused him to do something he would regret.  That’s exactly what happened to Gareth Lord, caddie for Henrik Stenson.  Lordy hit his shot and immediately hated it, resulting in him taking out his anger on the club.  In a toss that even John Daly would be proud of, he launched the club into the water.  Luckily, it wasn’t one of Stenson’s game clubs.

For those who actually flashed some good golf skills, the winner of the tournament was Tommy Fleetwood’s caddie, Ian Finnis, who landed his shot about seven feet away from the hole.  That was a good three feet closer than his closest competition, Joe Greiner, the caddie for Kevin Chappell.  Both of those shots are an accomplishment, however, as most people would miss the green entirely.

So while the golfing will be left to the pros this week, the caddies have already provided the entertainment and laughs at THE PLAYERS Championship.
