Tony Romo Shines in U.S. Open Qualifier but Ultimately Falls Short
While there are plenty of celebrities who like to try their hand at golf, many of them fail miserably. Just ask Charles Barkley. But for some stars and athletes, golf comes much easier. Such is the case with former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
Last week we reported that Romo would be competing for a spot in the U.S. Open. Well all of that time sitting behind Dak Prescott during the NFL season must’ve allowed Romo to brush up on his golf game, as he shot a three-over 75 at the Split Rail Links & Golf Club. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to earn a qualifying spot in the next major.
The score is a little misleading too, as Romo would’ve finished much better if he didn’t have a disastrous 15th hole. Heading to the tee box only one over par, Romo showed everyone why he is still considered an amateur and hit his shot right in the middle of a water hazard. That resulted in a three putt, triple bogey.
Despite the trouble, Romo still has a fan in his playing partner David Lutterus. Lutterus has played in 48 PGA TOUR events and believes that Romo could make it on the Tour one day. “As a pro you can see who can really hit the ball and who can’t, and he strikes it,” Lutterus said after earning a 2nd alternate spot in a playoff event with his two-under round.

Romo recently took a job as the head football analyst for CBS after retiring from the NFL so a move to the links full time seems unlikely anytime soon. He didn’t rule out a potential move, however, stating that “It’s different . Competition in itself I enjoy and, for me, just improving and looking at something to get better at.” He’ll certainly have to improve his putting and start missing those hazards if he wants to make it big though.
Now that Romo is in the broadcast booth instead of taking hits on Sunday, he should have a lot more time to golf in the coming years. And if that allows him to get better, maybe we’ll be seeing the former quarterback at a Tour event one day soon.
