Golf is Quickly Becoming a Retirement Plan for Other Athletes
Retiring and playing a bunch of golf is something that has become common among the older classes in America, which is why you probably see many old timers on the tee in front of your group. But golf is also becoming a popular trend for younger retirees who have become masters of other sports.
Chipper Jones is a good example of this trend, as he has played a ton of golf since retiring from baseball and becoming an adviser for the Atlanta Braves. Outside of just playing a typical round on courses around his home, Jones has also played in a few charity pro-ams. And while he certainly can’t hit a golf ball like he can a baseball, Jones isn’t that bad, as evidenced by an eagle he made at Thornblade’s Club.
For Jones, he decided to turn to golf upon his MLB retirement to keep his competitive spirit alive. “Golf is a great substitute for satisfying some of those competitive juices, and you can’t play baseball for as long as I did and just shut it off,” Jones said. “You’ve got to have an outlet or else I’d probably shrivel up and…I don’t know.”
This isn’t just Jones or a baseball trend either, as NBA star Stephen Curry believes he could turn to a golf career following his retirement from the NBA. In an interview with David Feherty, Curry stated that he once preferred the possibility of winning a green jacket over winning the NBA Championship. While he has already done the latter, he has also won The Masters, only on a video game.

According to Steph, he played as Tiger Woods against some friends in a pseudo-Masters tournament where he chipped in similar form to that of Tiger during the 2005 Masters tournament. His skills go far beyond the video game world as well, as Curry has recorded a hole-in-one at the Half Moon Bay Golf Links’ Ocean Course and held his own against former President Obama.
So while golf continues to be grandpa’s favorite retirement activity, it could soon be populated by many of your favorite athletes from other sports in the near future.
