It was announced today that the PGA TOUR and the Puerto Rico Tourism Company agreed to help host a an unofficial event on the island in March of 2018. The event will feature PGA professionals along with other athletes and celebrities competing for a title. The best part of the event is that all proceeds will be donated to the island after it was ravaged by Hurricane Maria.

That wasn’t the end of the good news for Puerto Rico either, as the PGA TOUR also announced that they had an agreement with the Puerto Rico Tourism Company to bring back the event’s marquee PGA TOUR event, the Puerto Rico Open, starting up again in 2019 and 2020.

Prior to this year, the Puerto Rico Open was played for ten straight years on the PGA TOUR.

“The Puerto Rico Open has been part of the PGA TOUR for the last 10 years and our commitment to golf on the island has never been stronger,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said in an announcement. “Our hope is that this special event in 2018 will benefit Puerto Rico’s recovery efforts to the fullest extent, while reminding the world that Puerto Rico is a premier golf and travel destination.”

There are not many details out yet about the recovery event or the Puerto Rico Open other than that they are set. The recovery event will be played in March of the upcoming year and will be played at the TPC Dorado Beach. And while there is no set amount that is expected to be raised by the event, they are hoping to raise no less than $500,000 for Hurricane Maria relief efforts.

This is a wonderful development for Puerto Rico as an island, since they have had little positive news at all since the summer. But once March hits, the island will hopefully be in better shape and host one of the best events of the PGA TOUR season.
