Oregon Golf Course Using Goats as Caddies

When players hit the golf course, many of them will choose to carry their own bags or use a cart. But a new golf course is offering a unique way of bringing your clubs along the course.

The Retreat & Links at Silvies Valley Ranch announced that they would be opening up a seven-hole course this year that will be called McVeigh’s Gauntlet. As part of this course, players will have the opportunity to utilize a trained goat as their caddie. You read that right, golfers can have their clubs escorted by a real-life goat.

The course is extremely excited to unveil this interesting system. “We’ve been developing an unprecedented caddie training program with our head caddie, Bruce LeGoat, to ensure that he and his team are ready for the opening of The Gauntlet this summer,” said owner Scott Campbell. “We’re truly redefining both goat and golf operations at the ranch.”

If you’re wondering how in the world this course got goats to be their caddies, it’s all done from the resort. Silver Valley Ranch raises the goats themselves from a young age and with the help of Bruce LeGoat, head caddie, the goats are trained to be caddies. Unfortunately, they won’t be able to give you yardage and lies but I hear they’re working on that.

Now the goats won’t be able to carry your entire bag like a human caddie, but they will be able to carry an unspecified amount of clubs for you on the Gauntlet. On top of being able to carry the clubs, trained goats are also able to transport your favorite beverages, along with having spots for balls and tees in their strapped bag.

While I’m not sure if I would trust a goat to carry my clubs along a course, I am certainly intrigued with how the system would work. If you’re in Oregon this summer and try it out, let us know how it is and maybe we’ll start training our own personal goats.
