The PGA TOUR is going through a time that includes a major schedule change in hopes to draw more attention to the game in a more practical way. Not only are the events changing, the sponsors could be switching over as well.

Now one of the biggest celebrities in the country is now trying to become one of those sponsors. A report from yesterday stated that Steph Curry is in talks to be a sponsor of a PGA TOUR event in 2019. Curry, currently in the middle of another run for an NBA Championship has told his representatives to reach out and talk about the possibility of hosting a tournament in the near future.

There’s no official word on what event he would be part of sponsoring but speculation is that it would be the Safeway Open, which is set to be played in the first week of October before the Tour heads out for its Asian Swing events. The event is also played in Napa, California, close to Steph’s NBA team, the Golden State Warriors.

And Steph isn’t the only one that’s excited about a professional golf partnership, as the PGA seems just as open to the idea. “There’s no doubt Stephen Curry brings a young, new, diverse audience to the PGA TOUR through his passion for this great game and support for the community,” said PGA Spokeswoman Laura Neal. “We’re excited about the prospect of partnering with an iconic athlete of his caliber in the future.”

Steph is a well known golfer who is also a scratch player. He even got to play in the Ellie Mae Classic this year on the Web.com Tour, where he shot consecutive 74s. Playing is a lot different than hosting a tournament, however, and he would be the highest profile celebrity to sponsor an official PGA TOUR event since Justin Timberlake. JT hosted the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open from 2008-2012.

Since Steph is currently in the midst of winning his own sport’s title, we wouldn’t expect an official announcement until his basketball season is over. But there certainly seems to be a lot of momentum for this to come to fruition in the near future.
