Fantasy Golf Predictions for the 2014 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Feb 6-9, 2014

Tournament Preview

This week we’re heading back to the coast of California for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am which will feature Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill, and Monterey Peninsula Country Club for the first three days.  So far this year we’ve seen quite a few of our fantasy picks hang tough in the mix and gather of some key early season TOUR dollars for your fantasy teams.  With one winner in the bag so far in 2014, we’re looking to raise that number quickly over the next few tournaments.

Player News

Phil Mickelson and Brandt Snedeker, both past winners at this event, will be back on course this week to try and grab some more Pebble Beach honors.  Phil’s ailing back looked to be feeling better at TPC Scottsdale, so we may give him another look this week.  Some of the celebrities in the field for this year’s Pro-Am include Kid Rock, Kurt Russell, Gary Mule Deer, Kenny G, Chris Berman, Don Cheadle, and Aaron Rodgers.  Your notable pros this week (other than Phil and Brandt), include Hunter Mahan, Jimmy Walker, Graeme McDowell, Dustin Johnson, and Jordan Spieth.

The Course

Pebble Beach Golf Links, where the final round will be played, measures in at 6,816 yards and plays as a par 72. With magnificent views from Carmel Bay, this legendary track has been a favorite PGA TOUR stop since the late 40’s. Originally designed back in 1919, course architects Jack Neville and Douglas Grant carefully tried to carve as many holes into the Pacific coastline as they could make fit.

In 1972 Pebble Beach welcomed its first professional major when it became host to the U.S. Open. With four more Opens and a PGA Championship under its belt, Pebble Beach has rapidly become a national favorite for pros and avid golf travelers alike.

  • Round 2: Friday (Feb 7) 54 degrees, 0% chance of rain, partly cloudy.
  • Round 3: Saturday (Feb 8) 59 degrees, 10% chance of rain, cloudy.

2013 Results

Brandt Snedeker closed out a subpar start to season on a positive note by carding only 68 and below scores all week to break the tournament scoring record previously held by Phil Mickelson and Mark O’Meara. “Sneds” came into the tournament with simultaneous runner-up finishes at both at Torrey Pines (2013 Farmers Insurance Open) and TPC Scottsdale (2013 WM Phoenix Open) and that confidences showed continuously throughout the week.  In the end Brandt was able to cruised to a two-stroke win over Chris Kirk (66).

Notes

All eyes will be on Phil Mickelson this week as he returns to his backyard course to try and claim the unofficial title of “owning Pebble Beach.”  Still fighting through some back issues, Phil is however his still someone to be cautious about this week.  If he gets off to a slow start again like he did in Scottsdale, Phil may not have the ability to fight through the tough field of  “new winners” that’s quickly growing on TOUR.

Snedeker is also dealing with a lingering knee injury he incurred jumping off a Segway Human Transporter, at an unofficial event late last year.  Brandt recently stated that he’s back to 100% but the reality of that remains to be seen.

On the Line

This week’s event has a total prize purse of $6.6 million with 1st place earning $1,180,000 and 500 important FedExCup Points.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win the 2014 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am

  • Hunter Mahan (Golficity Odds 12/1): Hunter looked solid at last week’s WM Phoenix Open, finishing T4 and carding some impressive scores (66, 71, 65, 68) before falling off with some key mistakes in later rounds. In the past three years at this event he’s finished no worse than T15 including a solo 2nd in 2011.  Give him a good look this week, and consider him as your key player.
  • Jason Day (Golficity Odds 15/1):  We really love this guy’s chances this week. Although he sits with just one TOUR win (2010 H.P. Byron Nelson), his game is certainly strong enough to hang with this week’s field.  He finished 6th here back in 2008, 14th in 2009 and then back to 6th again in 2013.  If he jumps out of the gate with some early birdies, Day is undoubtedly a player that can run away with it.  Also of note was his T2 finish at the Farmers two weeks ago where he looked like he had his game tuned up quite nicely.
  • Dustin Johnson (Golficity Odds 18/1):  Dustin has taken some time off since his T6 at Kapalua in early January, but that’s not to say he’s gone cold.  We’re sure he’s been hitting the links when not filming new TaylorMade commercials with his finance. Dustin will be teamed up with soon to be father-in-law Wayne Gretzky during the Pro-Am round. Overall DJ has a solid game for this week’s courses, but his finishes at Pebble Beach over the years have been inconsistent (winner in 2010).  We loved what we saw from him in early rounds at Kapalua and we think he’s a good choice for a top pick this time around.
  • Jordan Spieth (Golficity Odds 28/1):  We’re all aware of the recent emergence of 20-year-old Jordan Spieth. We’re also all to aware of his recent inability to finish strong due to some inconsistent putting.  Spieth could however rapidly become a dominant competitor if everything starts to click.  Remember when Rory ran away with the 2012 PGA Championship by 8 strokes?  We can easily see Jordan winning a tournament in that fashion if he’s on.  Pick him later, if you need a “B” player this week.
  • Jimmy Walker (Golficity Odds 32/1):  It’s tough not to pick Brandt Snedeker in this spot, but more on that in a second.  As the current FedExCup points leader, Walker missed the cut at the Farmers after reportedly feeling ill, but he has two T9s and a T3 in the last three AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am events.  We’re not riding very high on his chances this week but we also can’t rule him out to hold the trophy on Tuesday if he gets back to business as usual.

Sleeper Picks/Odds to Win the 2014 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am

  • Brandt Snedeker (Golficity Odds 40/1): This is a tough pick to put in the sleeper category because Las Vegas has high hopes for him this week.  While he’s been labeled as high as a 28/1 this week in some places, the reality is that Brandt has been quite inconsistent this year.  In 2013, he had four Top-2 finishes in the first five tournaments of the year.  That’s an unbelievable 2nd or better finish in 80% of his first five events! Compare that to this year’s start (T55, T11, T58, MC, T61) and you’ve got an entirely different story this year.  So sorry Vegas, but we don’t agree with you here.  We see Brandt more as a sleeper at 40/1.  Grab him if you need a long shot this week.
  • Phil Mickelson (Golficity Odds 50/1): It rare we put a guy who basically owns this tournament as a long shot, but we’re not entirely confident that Phil is completely over his back injury.  Although he played fine last weekend, TPC Scottsdale isn’t as challenging as Pebble Beach.  Like we stated above, if he comes out of the gate slow, Phil will get beat up.  Check back on the injury report this week, perhaps Wednesday or Thursday morning to see if Mickelson is feeling good.  If so, pick him up and a sleeper pick.
