2018 Mayakoba Golf Classic Fantasy Sleeper Report

As if we needed any further proof, Bryson DeChambeau showed why only the select few golfers on this planet can be classed as genuine, world class studs.

These guys just make things happen. There’s no ‘close but no cigar’ for Bryson and the other elite players, no choking and absolutely no excuses.

Take Sunday at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. DeChambeau shared the overnight lead, and in good conditions a whole host of players put in low scores to get into the mix.

But did the crumble? Absolutely not. He stuck to his guns, stayed true to the principles which had taken him to three wins in eleven starts, eagled the sixteenth – a huge help! – and stayed strong to the last to bag yet another title for his impressive resumé.

Like we say, Bryson is a prime contender for the big ones in 2019.

He sits out this week, and misses out on one of the most aesthetically-pleasing properties on the PGA TOUR.

El Camaleon, found in the Playa del Carmen resort on Mexico’s east coast, offers coastal holes overlooking the azure Caribbean Sea and inland holes that wind through mangroves, tropical plantations and more.

The players love it here – especially the robes they get to wear on the balconies overlooking many of the holes, and the good vibes continue in what is a fairly comfortable test of ball-striking if the heavy winds stay away.

The forecast is good, and so the only real challenge facing the players is getting used to the Paspalum grass, which tends to run slightly slower than Bentgrass or Bermuda.

The greens here are pretty small too, but they are largely flat and receptive so there won’t be any chipping demons to be found.

Really, this is an approach play shootout, where efficiency with your irons is key to creating birdie opportunities. The rather eclectic collection of recent champions here – Patton Kizzire, Charley Hoffman, Pat Perez, Graeme McDowell and Harris English – suggests that anybody who can string four decent rounds together might be in with a chance!

And so with that in mind, who are the sleepers we are getting onside ahead of the Mayakoba Golf Classic?

The Mayakoba Golf Classic Fantasy Sleeper Report

Adam Hadwin – Vegas Odds 50/1 – On the cusp of big things in 2019, perhaps, is Adam Hadwin, a gifted Canadian who arguably hasn’t achieved his potential as yet on the PGA TOUR.

He’s brilliantly consistent (22 cuts made in 25 starts last season) without taking his game to the level (three top-10s), and so the 31-year-old has to find a spark from somewhere.

Just lately there have been some interesting signs from him, though, with a top-10 at the CJ Cup followed by T30 at the WGC-HSBC Champions; not bad among the world’s best, with a decent round of 68 thrown in for good measure.

Hadwin also banked a top-10 at this course in 2016, and that comfortability will hopefully yield results from a player who appears to be in some form.

C.T. Pan – Vegas Odds 50/1 – With top-fives at the Wyndham Championship and Dell Technologies Championship in recent times, it’s fair to say the good times aren’t far away for the likeable C.T. Pan.

Pan didn’t quite excite on the Asian Swing as much as he was perhaps expected to, but there was some good stuff in there nonetheless: rounds of 65 and 68 at the CIMB Classic, a closing 66 at the CJ Cup and a 68 at the WGC-HSBC.

To break his PGA TOUR duck, Pan will need to find the consistency of four good rounds in a row, but with a decent stack of top-five finishes to his name, the 26-year-old is getting closer with each passing season.

Chez Reavie – Vegas Odds 50/1 – He may only have played 16 measured rounds this season, but Chez Reavie currently ranks 18th on Tour for Strokes Gained: Approach, and that indicates how well he has been hitting his irons thus far.

He’s also been crushing his tee shots as well (15th for Total Driving), and as we know classy ongoing ball-striking is often a recipe for a winner in the coming weeks.

The only concern with backing the 36-year-old is that his last win came a decade ago now, but perhaps we can at least draw inspiration from the likes of Keegan Bradley and Kevin Na ending their own trophy droughts in the past couple of months.

Denny McCarthy – Vegas Odds 60/1 – The 25-year-old was the best player on the Web.com Tour last season, topping the money list, and in the early going alongside the big boys his form is travelling.

He won the Web.com TOUR Championship a matter of weeks ago, and has since followed up with a T7 at the Sanderson Farms Championship and T15 at the Shriners last week, where he posted a middle 36 of 65-66.

A brilliant scrambler and putter, McCarthy also showed some class off the tee at TPC Summerlin last week, and with these early season events being a fantastic opportunity for the Web.com graduates to excel, we’ll be looking out for another commanding performance from him in Playa del Carmen.

Keith Mitchell – Vegas Odds 80/1 – Big Keith enjoyed a fantastic 2018 season on the PGA TOUR, and next year his goal will be to land that maiden title.

A consistent campaign got him all the way through to the BMW Championship of the FedExCup series, and that came on the back of four top-10 finishes.

A solo second at the Corales Puntacana was the pick of the bunch, and that catches the eye given that it was played on the coast and on Paspalum grass as well over in the Dominican Republic.

Across the whole of last season he ranked 13th for Birdie Average, so this is a serious talent just waiting to make his big breakthrough.
