28-Year-Old Pro Golfer Arie Irawan Found Dead in Hotel Room

It was reported on Monday that Malaysian born golfer and long-time member of Series-China, Arie Irawan, was found dead in his hotel room at the age of 28. Irawan was found by his hotel roommate Kevin Techakanokboon who noticed that he Irawan was unresponsive in his bed. He then called upon two other pros to call for help and perform CPR on Irawan.

Despite all of the resuscitation efforts, Irawan was pronounced dead 45 minutes after he was discovered by Techakanokboon.

Early indications state that the cause of death is from natural causes but there has not been an official autopsy on his body yet. Naturally here has been an outpouring of support for his friends and family.

“This is just a terrible tragedy that affects all of us who are part of a very tight-knit family here in China,” tour executive director Greg Carlson said in a statement. “Arie played with us in 2018, his first full year on our Tour, and I know he was excited about this season as he continued his professional golf pursuits. We are incredibly saddened by this news, and we extend our sincere condolences to his wife and family.”

After the discovery of Irawan’s body, Series-China decided to suspend the final round of the Sanya Championship.

Irawan originally began his golf career at the University of Tulsa in 2008 and then went on to play on the Asian Development Tour and several other PGA subsidiaries in Asia. At just 28 years old, Irawan still had much potential as a golfer and this untimely death comes as a shock to all golfers.

It is always awful to learn about a passing like this, especially when it hits so close to the golf community. We here send our thoughts to Irawan’s family and friends as they deal with this difficult time.
