Patrick Reed is Once Again Hoping His Family Doesn’t Show Up At Augusta
This week is huge for Patrick Reed as he’s attempting to defend his only major championship at the Masters. That is sure to bring an enormous amount of pressure to the 28-year-old but he’s also got other things on his mind.
After winning the Masters last year, Reed revealed some details as to his strained relationship with his family that has caused him to phase them out of his life. The family relationship is so bad that Reed attempts to have his family removed from PGA Tour events. Outside of golf, Reed has even gone as far as refusing to allow his parents to meet his children.
The relationship issues stretch back to when Reed was in college and won the NCAA National Championship. At that time, Reed was going through some issues but made a major life commitment to marry his now wife, Justine. As Reed tells, his parents were not in favor of the marriage and actively attempted to convince Reed to think more about the decision. The issue became such a wedge that Reed has virtually shunned his entire family from his life.

Since he has become a professional, Patrick has attempted to keep his estranged parents and sister away from any event he plays in. In fact, he even has an inner circle that looks out for his family every tournament he participates in.
When Reed spots his family or is told that they are along the rope line, he immediately asks that they be removed. The family has appeared at a few events since the Masters but has only been removed once after Reed’s father made some aggressive movements toward Justine.
Despite Reed pushing them away from his life, his parents are still his biggest supporters. Reed’s mother is very active in supporting her son on social media and as I was saying, they still attend events to support his golf endeavors. And since the family lives only a few miles from Augusta, it wouldn’t be a shock if they showed up this week to watch him defend his green jacket.
This is certainly a sad story that Reed has to deal with on a weekly basis and one that all involved hope can be resolved at some point. But until then, hopefully, the potential appearance of his family won’t distract Reed from his goal of repeating as Masters Champion.
