Patrick Reed Celebrated His Masters Win Without His Family By His Side
Patrick Reed just won the most important golf tournament in his life, capturing his first Major and first Green Jacket. But even with this win, Reed’s celebration did not include a large part of family.
Typically, when a player wins an event of this magnitude, all friends and family are there to witness the moment but Reed only had his wife in attendance during the final round. This was even more odd, being that Reed’s family lives just a few miles down the road from Augusta. But the reasons for their absence dates back several years and resulted in icy relations for the Reed family.
After being a bit of a golf prodigy through high school, Reed let loose once entering college at the University of Georgia, being arrested twice and being caught cheating on the course by teammates. This resulted in Reed being kicked off of the team and his transfer to Augusta State, where he thrived while continuing his be immature and abrasive behavior. Reed found comfort in his girlfriend, Justine, and that’s where the Reed family began to unravel.

Reed married Justine at the age of 22, and his parents strongly discouraged him from making that commitment so early. It got so bad, that Reed didn’t invite his family to their wedding, and they have not since had the opportunity to meet their grandchild. Reed hasn’t even talked to his family since the wedding and when the family showed up to watch him at the 2014 U.S. Open, Patrick had them escorted out by the police.
Their issues became more public in recent years, with Justine ranting on Facebook about the Reeds and Reed’s younger sister, Hannah, saying that Patrick isn’t the brother she used to know. This has also affected Reed’s personal life on the PGA TOUR, as many of his colleagues claim not to know anything about him, describing him as a lone wolf during most events. This made the win on Sunday feel a little awkward for the golf world.
Reed’s family is certainly still happy for Patrick but the sadness surrounding their situation provides for an awkward story line going forward for Patrick. We can only hope that one day the family will be able to work out their differences and be brought back into the fold of Patrick’s life as he moves forward on the PGA TOUR.
