Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the RBC Canadian Open
2019 RBC Canadian Open Fantasy Preview
At a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course, arguably the jewel in his crown, we shouldn’t be surprised that the leaderboard at the Memorial Tournament descended into an iron play shootout.
In the end, it was Patrick Cantlay – one of the best in the business with a mid-range iron in hand – who powered his way to the title with a majestic final round of 64.
The likes of the rejuvenated Martin Kaymer, Adam Scott and even the fast-finishing Tiger Woods could only watch Cantlay’s masterclass and admire it – if there were any doubts that this was a top echelon golfer, those can now be crushed.
The 27-year-old may just be on the shortlist for glory in his home state of California in next week’s US Open, but just before we get major fever for a third time this year there’s one more bit of business to consider.
The RBC Canadian Open takes on a new slot in the Tour schedule and is played at a new(ish) home too. It’s the last chance for many in the field to find form ahead of the US Open, and those sponsored by RBC will enjoy a little sweetener too.
There’s plenty to play for in Hamilton this week.

Last Week’s Fantasy Results
After picking winners in back-to-back weeks, we were derailed last week and burdened by the cut line.
Cantlay was unstoppable on Sunday and unfortunately we did not stack the chards on him. However, Billy Ho proved to be a top sleeper pick with a T9 finish at a super low price tag; but it wasn’t enough.
Time to move on to Canada this week and then over to Pebble for a chance to pick our second major winner this year.

The 2019 RBC Canadian Open Field
Dustin Johnson, who won this event by three strokes last year at former host Glen Abbey, will bank some sweet RBC bucks while looking to consolidate his form ahead of another major tilt.
He will be joined by a high-quality field that also includes four-time major winner Brooks Koepka, who defends at Pebble Beach next week, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas.
Jim Furyk, one of the most decorated Canadian Open champions, joins Scott Piercy as the only two contemporary winners at Hamilton Golf & Country Club, while the home contingent will be led by Texas Open champion Corey Conners, Adam Hadwin and Mackenzie Hughes.
Former Masters Champion Mike Weir will look to become the first Canadian since 1954 to win their home Open.

This Week’s Course Preview
After a four-year stint at Glen Abbey, it’s all change for the Canadian Open with Hamilton G&CC taking on hosting duties.
It’s a real sea-change for the tournament, with Glen Abbey being somewhere the players could unleash bombs off the tee. Hamilton is anything but.
One of the shortest tracks on the rotation at just 6,966 yards for its Par 70, Hamilton boats just two Par 5s and one Par 4 measuring more than 450 yards.
But don’t be fooled into thinking that the bombers will over-power it. Many of these fairways feature severe doglegs, and so shot-shaping with iron in hand off the tee will be a key feature this week.
This could be a second shot course. These greens are notorious for not drying out that well, and with some rain in the forecast early in the week the players could be firing at the pins.
Back when Jim Furyk was winning here in 2006 and Scott Piercy six years later, this was a golf course packed with thick trees. But an exercise to open up the playing area in the original vision of designer Harry Colt – that noted Links fanatic – means that many have been removed.
This parkland track is peppered with bunkers, however, and one of its key defenses are the small Poa Annua greens, some of which are heavily contoured and sloping. The players will be praying for rain to slow these down!
This is an old-fashioned golf course that will reward measured, classic tee-to-green play. It should be a fantastic week!

Weather Forecast for Hamilton, ON, CAN
As ever, these early forecasts are subject to change, but the prediction for Tuesday and Wednesday is a concern.
Both days suggest rain is in the offing, with Wednesday featuring the dreaded thunderstorms with lots of the wet stuff in the offing.
Happily, the forecast from Thursday to Sunday is much more promising.
There should only be a few showers, if any rain at all, with sunny spells being the dominant feature. Temperatures could reach 74°F, with the winds getting no more aggressive than 8-10 mph.
Last Year’s Results from the RBC Canadian Open
When Dustin Johnson carded 66-65 to take a healthy lead into the final round at Glen Abbey, most expected him to romp away and win the title.
Others, however, remember the times where DJ has run into trouble when trying to close out a win.
Well, this time Johnson made no mistake as he closed out with a 66 – birdieing the first two holes to settle any nerves – to win by three.
Byeong-Hun An and Tommy Fleetwood opened up with 66s apiece but couldn’t capitalize, finishing T2 and T6 respectively.
Whee Kim shared T2 with his compatriot, while Keegan Bradley – who fired rounds of 63 and 64 among some mediocrity – ended up in solo fourth.

Where to Play Fantasy Golf for the RBC Canadian Open this Week
One week shy of the US Open and we’re looking to build our bankroll ahead of what should be a fantastic slate next week, so let’s see if we can pocket some handy payouts this week to get the ball rolling.
- PGA $450k Drive the Green: For just $5 entry, gamers have the dual opportunity this week to bank a $100k top prize or at the very least add some handy cash to their accounts ahead of the Pebble Beach extravaganza.
- PGA $45k Birdie: If you plan on entering multiple line-ups this week then this contest could be the way to go. You’ll cash for finishing inside the top 25% of teams, so there are multiple chances to accumulate a handy return here.
This Week’s Fantasy Notes for the RBC Canadian Open
We don’t have a huge amount to work with this week, but the identities of the last two winners at Hamilton – Furyk and Piercy – at least offer something of a narrative.
Both of those guys, at their best, are flushers: straight off the tee, precise on approach and, in Furyk’s case, a solid enough putter.
It’s hardly earth-shattering analysis, but it’s confirmation that Hamilton is very much a second shot layout.
Remember too that RBC are a significant event and player sponsor on the PGA TOUR, and that there’s a major next week. Which players are motivated? Which are going through the motions for their sponsor? Which are already thinking about Pebble Beach?
It’s a tough conundrum, but big players missing cuts or withdrawing is no coincidence in events like this. Try to decipher if those on your shortlist are teeing up for the right reasons in Ontario.
Otherwise, we don’t have a huge amount to work with. Architect Harry Colt was more renowned for his coastal Links tracks than inner city, parkland layouts, and there aren’t any specific correlated courses other than those which reward arrow-straight tee-to-green play.
So focus on premium ball-strikers this week, and those who excel at making birdie on Par 4s. If they are motivated to play well for four days, you might just be rewarded.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win the RBC Canadian Open
Top Tier Pick #1:
Dustin Johnson (Odds: 6/1, FPPG: 92.7, GPFP: 119.57 Salary: $11,900)
One of the most high-profile players in the RBC stable, Johnson has something of an obligation to attend the Canadian Open.
So you might think he goes through the motions in this event, but nothing could be further from the truth.
A winner last year, with two other runners-up finishes, DJ tends to bring his best to Canada and that bodes well this week in a field where there are question marks over many.
Brooks Koepka, as we know, doesn’t win many non-majors – not a bad problem to have, perhaps – while McIlroy, Kuchar and Thomas all missed the cut in Ohio, in various levels of distress.
There are a few other lukewarm contenders but none really get the juices flowing like DJ, who has finished T2 at the Masters and in the PGA Championship within his last three starts. He loves Poa Annua and thrives on the Par 4s, among any other reasons to like his chances this week.
Key Stats:
- Par 4 Scoring Average – 2nd
- SG: Tee-to-Green – 4th
- SG: Putting – 6th
Top-Tier Pick #2:
Jim Furyk (Odds: 50/1, FPPG: 61.4, GPFP: 54.63 Salary: $8,800)
One of the few players in the field with happy memories of Hamilton G&CC, Furyk is also playing well enough to shine at the layout once more.
Mr 58 won here in 2006, and it’s not difficult to see why: this is a track that is perfectly suited to his game.
He will find plenty of fairways, and that allows him to play out of the short stuff and attack these heavily contoured greens – an absolute must.
A short Par 70 is undoubtedly Furyk’s forte – he won’t be overpowered here – and so perhaps one of the senior statesmen of the PGA TOUR can show the young guns how to take care of business on an old-fashioned track.
Key Stats:
- Driving Accuracy – 1st
- Par 4 Scoring Average – 8th
- Greens in Regulation – 13th
Mid-Tier Pick #1:
Jonas Blixt (Odds: 100/1, FPPG: 57.8, GPFP: 46.26 Salary: $7,800)
In 19 starts this season, Blixt has recorded four top-25 finishes.
It’s not stellar form by any means, but it does confirm that when conditions suit the Swede is capable of cashing well.
And as one of the shorter hitters around, the basic set-up of Hamilton at least appeals to Blixt’s inability to drop bombs off the tee.
But what he has been doing very nicely of late is making scores: four of his last eight rounds have been 67 or better, and an effort of 67-64-74-68 at Colonial is excellent by anybody’s standards.
The three-time PGA TOUR winner is trending nicely once more….
Key Stats:
- Par 4 Birdie or Better Leaders – 50th
- Scoring Average – 50th
- SG: Putting – 51st
Mid-Tier Pick #2:
Corey Conners (Odds: 100/1, FPPG: 55.5, GPFP: 44.40 Salary: $7,500)
It’s a return to Ontario, the place of his birth, for Corey Conners this week.
That doesn’t necessarily dictate that a brilliant performance is forthcoming, but for one of the brightest young talents around we certainly hope it lights a spark.
An excellent driver of the ball, there’s also something special about Conners’ iron game, and those two aspects go together very nicely at Hamilton.
He gained strokes on the Bentgrass green of Muirfield Village last week too, so perhaps the total package is just around the corner for the Canadian.
Key Stats:
- Greens in Regulation – 6th
- SG: Approach – 16th
- Total Driving – 16th
Low-Tier Pick:
Harold Varner III (Odds: 150/1, FPPG: 55.8, GPFP: 44.67 Salary: $7,100)
In his penultimate start, Harold Varner III was teeing off in the final group of a major.
Yes, he suffered a bit of a famous meltdown thereafter and missed the cut at the Memorial last week, but should he be so quickly kicked to the curb?
It’s not been the best of seasons for HVIII, but he is a more-than-capable performer and you won’t find may better in the budget category this week.
And he’s streaky too, putting together series’ of birdies – especially on the Par 4s. If Hamilton plays soft, he could put together some low scores.
Key Stats:
- Par 4 Scoring Average – 39th
- SG: Tee-to-Green – 76th
- Birdie Average – 91st
Sleeper Pick for the RBC Canadian Open
Matt Every (Odds: 150/1, FPPG: 64.2, GPFP: 76.98 Salary: $7,400)
A missed cut at the Memorial last week should not take away from a mini renaissance for Matt Every.
He putted terribly in Ohio but his tee-to-green game wasn’t in too bad shape, and that’s a continuation of T2 and T17 finishes at the Byron Nelson and Charles Schwab Challenge.
At his best, the 35-year-old is a strong operator from tee-to-green, and that is evidenced by a return of seven top-25s from eleven starts this term.
And as somebody who has twice won at Bay Hill, the only surprise is that he hasn’t gone on to achieve better things in his career.
Key Stats:
- Birdie Average – 10th
- Par 4 Scoring Average – 39th
- SG: Tee-to-Green – 68th
Alternative Sleeper Pick for the RBC Canadian Open
Peter Malnati (Odds: 150/1, FPPG: 55.7, GPFP: 44.54 Salary: $7,100)
It was a fantastic week for Peter Malnati at Muirfield Village. He ranked third for Strokes Gained: Approach, and his brilliance with his irons – if repeated – will also be rewarded this week.
The 31-year-old is a frustrating talent. A former PGA TOUR and two-time Web.com Tour winner, he disappears off the radar for months on end, despite being excellent with his irons and a brilliant putter.
Perhaps some more sustained form is around the corner, as Malnati has recorded four top-40s in his last six starts. Maybe a top-10 – or better – is on the horizon?
Key Stats:
- SG: Putting – 19th
- SG: Approach – 54th
- Par 4 Scoring Average – 66th
