The Open Championship finally kicked off on Thursday morning and the chase for the final major championship of the year is in full swing. There are many storylines from the first day but, not surprisingly, Tiger Woods is grabbing a lot of them.

Unfortunately for Tiger, the headlines that he’s catching are for his disappointing play instead of being in contention. After his first round, Tiger is sitting at +7, which is good enough for a T-144th. That is the worst first round that Woods has ever had at The Open.

He’s not alone, however, as other top players like Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy had equally bad rounds, if not worse.

Tiger is getting much of the attention, however, because of all of the conditions that led up to The Open. Even though he was a favorite heading into Thursday, there were many in the golf world that challenged Woods’ strategy of taking the month off before playing Royal Portrush. Many thought it wouldn’t benefit him and that seems like it is becoming a reality.

One other concern for Tiger, however, maybe his health.

Injuries are nothing new to Woods after all the procedures he has had done in the last few years and they’re now starting to catch up with him. Tiger complained of some back soreness in the cool weather but that won’t stop him from competing. “Just the way it is,” Woods said. “Father Time and some of the procedures I’ve had. Just the way it’s going to be.”

While it’s certainly concerning to see Woods flop this bad in the final major of the year, especially after winning The Masters, there is still time to make up ground. He’s sitting almost a dozen shots behind the leaders and the cut line looks like it could be at around +2 or +3 so he’ll have to have a big second round if he hopes to play this weekend.
