MEDICAL CHECK: Justin Thomas Has Skin Cancer Scare
Coming off of another strong year on the PGA TOUR, Justin Thomas has firmly cemented his spot as one of the top players in the golfing world. But even the best of us have some medical scares.
JT opened up about his most recent medical checkup where it was discovered that he had an early stage of melanoma, a form of skin cancer. It was discovered when Thomas went to the dermatologist and they found a mole on his leg that had turned cancerous. No one should be worried, however, as they caught it early enough that there will be no lingering effects.
But it’s not all good news because removing the mole to make sure all cancerous cells are gone requires a pretty intense surgery. That surgical procedure left Thomas with a huge, nasty scar on his leg. He posted the scar on Instagram and it’s pretty disgusting so if you get queasy easily, you may want to keep scrolling past it.

Thomas is now trying to spread the word about skin cancer to all of his fans. “No harm can come from it and it’s the best way to catch anything before it becomes a serious issue,” Thomas posted. “Especially for all the junior golfers (and other athletes) spending so much time in the sun. It is so important to make sure you’re monitoring your body – no matter how old you are or how much sunscreen you use. It really got my attention, and hoping it does the same to y’all!”
It’s great that JT is bringing up this issue too because this is an issue that is becoming more and more prominent in today’s society. The Skin Cancer Foundation has found that cases of skin cancer have gone up by nearly 80% in the last 20 years. And on top of that, it is expected that there will be about 8% more reported cases in 2019 as there were in 2018.
We’re relieved to see that Thomas caught this early enough that it won’t be an issue for him moving forward. And we’ll join in Thomas’ message in reminding everyone that it can’t hurt to get yourself checked out, especially if you’re spending a lot of time outside.
