If you have ever tried to get tickets for a major golf event in the United States, you know that the process can be incredibly grueling. But for those who attempted to get Ryder Cup tickets for the 2020 event today, the situation caused outrage.

Everyone is excited to see the Ryder Cup back in the United States when the top players from US and Europe will clash at Whistling Straits. There are thousands upon thousands of fans in the U.S. and Europe that wanted to take their chances at purchasing tickets to the event and for some of them, the experience they went through was downright horrifying.

The way you get tickets for the event is very similar to how you get tickets for other majors. The PGA of America sets up a lottery system, where interested people can add their email to a system and a random lottery will give a select few people the opportunity to purchase tickets. The system seems fair until you realize that “winning” the lottery doesn’t actually guarantee you tickets for the Ryder Cup.

The instructions indicate that if your email is selected out of the lottery you are to receive an access code to a virtual waiting room to buy tickets. The only problem is, that it only guarantees you a spot in the room, not tickets. So for some that believed they were going to get their hands on tickets for winning the lottery, they walked away empty-handed after waiting for over an hour in some instances.

Even more frustrating are the reported glitches that the system encountered. Many fans indicated that they were booted back to the end of the line once they chose their tickets while others reported error messages when they attempted to pay for their tickets and that they too were sent to the back of the line.

Even worse, as all this was happening, some tickets were already popping up on second-hand sites for five times the face value.

The PGA of America is yet to deliver a comment other than expressing their regret to those who didn’t get tickets. They say there are some limited options left for the Ryder Cup so hopefully, some of those fans that got booted from the system will be able to get something for their efforts in the future.
