While many people may not consider it a great honor to be placed on a stamp, except for those who collect them, it’s actually something that a lot of great people have accomplished. And now one of golf’s legends will earn that honor.

It was announced earlier this week that Arnold Palmer will be one of the next forever stamps to be released at a later date. The late Palmer is obviously one of golf’s heroes and so fitting for his legacy that the U.S. government viewed him as someone worthy of this honor. The picture used on this Forever Stamp will be James Drake’s action photo of Palmer from the 1964 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club.

For those who may be wondering what a Forever Stamp is, just as I was, it is a stamp that you can buy and it is good to send mail forever. So, for example, if you buy the Arnold Palmer Forever for $0.48 when it is released and stamp prices then rise to $0.58, you can still use the stamp.  Pretty simple, right? So perhaps when this Arnold Palmer stamp is released, you’ll want to buy a bunch.

Typically, these Forever Stamps only honor the absolute best people in our society and Arnie certainly represents that as the USPS explained. They said they chose Palmer  for “his positive impact and compelling story, rising from humble beginnings to become a globally revered champion,” and because “With drive and charisma, he helped transform a game once seen as a pastime for the elite into a sport enjoyed by the masses.”

For those keeping track or collecting golf stamps, Palmer will be the fourth golfer to be honored with a stamp. The great Bobby Jones was honored with two stamps, while Francis Ouimet was honored after winning the U.S. Open as an amateur in 1937. The other golfer that has been honored is Babe Zaharias, Olympic gold medalist, and 10-time LPGA Major Champion.

So even though stamps may not be so exciting you can see how much of an honor this is for Palmer’s family. And it should also give us all a reason to get off of our phones and head to a post office when the stamp officially comes out.
