WATCH OUT: Gary McCord Tees Off After Being Fired By CBS
If you’ve watched any of golf’s events on CBS and its affiliate networks you are used to hearing the voice of Gary McCord. His voice has brought us analysis for over 30 years on the network. But that streak has just came to an end and not on good terms.
The golf world learned last week that McCord, who was operating on a two-year contract with options, would not be brought back on a new deal for the 2020 season. McCord had been broadcasting for the network since 1986 and it was widely believed that the 72-year-old would have left the network on his own terms. But as McCord explains it, he did not get that option because he was fired.
“This is not how I would have preferred to see it end,” McCord said. “I’m going on 72. I’ve been doing this for 30-odd years. I knew I was coming to the end of the deal, but I was going to go out on my terms. That’s not happening now. Bottom line, they fired me.” McCord went even further into discussing what happened between him and CBS and how disappointed he is with how everything has gone.
On top of the firing of McCord, CBS will also not be retaining his longtime broadcast partner Peter Kostis. Kostis had been on CBS’s golf broadcast since 1992. According to McCord, the two were told by Sean McManus, the president of CBS’s sports division, that they were going in another direction because the golf team had become too stale.
Plenty, would argue that Kostis and McCord weren’t stale for anyone, but instead CBS is hoping to attract more fans with a younger team. From the rumors floating around with GolfDigest, it’s expected that 2008 Masters winner Trevor Immelman will be added to the broadcast along with his brother Mark who already does some media work. Davis Love III could also be part of the crew for major events like the Masters.
As for McCord, his days might not be over as he told GolfDigest that everyone should be watching the Waste Management Open this year but he didn’t elaborate any further. If this is the end for McCord and Kostis, however, it was a great run for the two and we wish them nothing best in the future.
