SPOTTED: Leaked Pictures of New Callaway Mavrik and TaylorMade SIM are Popping Up
It’s mid-December, which means that there’s approximately one month until the annual PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando. Naturally, the majority of the buzz surrounding the PGA Show concerns the newest golf equipment being debuted, especially drivers.
The past 3 years, in particular, have become a true arms race between Callaway and TaylorMade, unofficially starting with the Epic/Epic Sub Zero verses updated M1/M2 and continuing into the current Epic Flash v. M5/M6.
While nothing official has been confirmed, teaser images and details have been leaked about Callaway and TaylorMade’s newest drivers.
Callaway MAVRIK

I’ll start with the Callaway simply because we “know” more about it.
While Callaway hasn’t confirmed anything, there is one thing that we can rely on from the photos—Jailbreak Technology. As pictured on the sole of the driver and fairway pictures, Jailbreak will be returning, in all likelihood, to help increase ball speeds by reducing the amount of distortion caused in the club head by impact forces. Although not pictured, we can also presume that Callaway’s newest driver tech, Flash Face, will be returning.
And for anyone asking, Xander Schauffele confirmed at the Presidents Cup that the orange color scheme is legit:

However, in stark contrast to the current Epic Flash series, another immediately noticeable feature is that it appears that neither the standard MAVRIK nor the Sub Zero models will be equipped with adjustable weight track. Indeed, some of the design cues bring to mind more features associated with the Rogue—a Standard model that features a single, rear-located perimeter weight and a low-spin, Sub Zero equipped with forward and rear adjustable weights that can help dial in a ball flight, spin and forgiveness.

Although the Callaway teaser doesn’t provide any additional insight into what advancements have been made in the MAVRIK, it’s clear that distance will continue to be one of the marketing focuses.
TaylorMade SIM

To start, there’s not a whole lot that we know about the new TaylorMade SIM (Shape In Motion) driver. Indeed, unlike the MAVRIK, TaylorMade hasn’t published an official teaser for their new 2020 offering and no pros have been spotted using it. That said, it’s worth noting that a Google search of “TaylorMade SIM” gives the results pictured below and, therefore, can presume the name and pictures are legitimate:

What is readily apparent from the pre-release pictures is that the M-Series is being retired. Perhaps TaylorMade got a little concerned about things getting a bit ridiculous like the Now That’s What I Call Music albums when we got to M11/M12.
At the same time, there’s no denying that the M-Series metal woods brought some great technology into the fold for TM: perimeter adjustable weighting, Twist Face Technology and, most recently, the speed injection making the face even a little hotter.

On that note, additional teaser pictures show that Injected Twist Face will be making an encore appearance and that the color scheme for the SIM will be a mix of carbon, the signature white crown to help frame the ball and blue accenting.
Finally, with respect to name—SIM (Shape In Motion)—one would imagine that it’s a reference to the new design cues and features that the SIM driver will be equipped with to help swing and/or ball speed in some manner.
Additionally, the “MAX” labeling hints at the possibility that TM might be taking a page out of PING’s book and releasing models dedicated to certain golfers—a Standard model for the mainstream golfer, a Low-Spin model, a Draw-model to help fight slices and, finally, a Max model that features the highest MOI (forgiveness) of the entire lineup.
Regardless, make sure to keep your eyes on Golficity when the PGA Show arrives for updates and highlights of all the new products that will be hitting the marketplace.
