Ridgewood, NJ – All of the hype heading into the final day of the 2014 Barclays left fans wondering if Jim Furyk was going to win his first event since the 2010 TOUR Championship. The 44 year-old TOUR veteran has held the 54-hole lead in eight events since that historic win, and today he failed to close the door yet again.

As Furyk slid down the leaderboard (eventually finishing 8th) Hunter Mahan emerged to grab the spotlight, as the Golf Boyz Mountain Man, birdied three straight holes late in the day to take a commanding 3-stroke lead into the 18th.

But Mahan’s finish was no walk in the park. After draining a clutch birdie putt on the tough Par 5 17th, Mahan drove his tee shot on 18 into the right rough where was forced to punch back out to the fairway. Hunter knew a par would seal the deal, but quickly found himself struggling to save bogey with the threatening, and dangerous, Jason Day waiting in the group behind him.

Hunter put his third shot into the heavy rough but ultimately managed to up and down for bogey, which turned out to be enough for a two shot victory over Appleby, Tringale, and Day, who all finished T2.

The victory was the sixth of his career, and certainly one of the most important, as he now takes a commanding FedExCup points lead heading into TPC Boston next week.

Mahan came into Ridgewood Country Club ranked No. 62 in FedExCup Playoffs points and today’s victory helped snap a 48 tournament winless streak for the California native. The win also guaranteed him a trip to Boston next week, and rocketed him up 62 spots to the No. 1 spot on the 2014 FedExCup leaderboard.

An interesting side note, Mahan remains as the only player to participate in every FedExCup Playoff event since the new format first commenced in 2007.

We also all recall last season when he held the 54-hole lead at the Canadian Open before withdrawing to be by his wife’s side for the birth of their first baby Zoey, who cheerfully greeted him on the green after his victorious round on Sunday.

With the first round of the FedExCup Playoffs now complete, the remaining Top 100 will head to TPC Boston this week for the Deutsche Bank Championship.

A total of six players who were previously within the Top 100 (including Jonas Blixt and Geoff Ogilvy) now find themselves out of the running due to sub-par performances at The Barclays.

Mahan and the rest of the FedExCup top 100 points leaders will now head to TPC Boston to take on the Deutsche Bank Championship and continue chasing golf’s biggest monetary prize – the $10 millon FedExCup purse.
