2020 PLAYERS Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

If you grew tired of jolly-spirited birdie fests during the California Swing, you must be enjoyed with what you are seeing over in the east right now.

Barely a week after PGA National provided a devilish test for the Honda Classic, the conditions at Bay Hill over the week took the levels of barbarism to the next level.

The scene was set then for a sleeper pick to outlast the field, and that proved to be the case as Tyrrell Hatton simply made fewer mistakes than anyone else to win with a score of -4 – on of the highest winning tallies outside of the majors in decades.

Two down, two more to go then on the Florida Swing – and this week’s outing is a cracker.

THE PLAYERS Championship is regarded by many as the ‘fifth major’, which is rather disingenuous because it doesn’t need such a heavy billing. This is an event that stands on its own two feet.

One of the reasons that THE PLAYERS is so beloved is because it is played at TPC Sawgrass, one of the most iconic layouts anywhere in the world.

You know all about the seventeenth hole already, but there is so much more to this slice of Pete Dye mastery that has been around for decades and remained largely untouched.

There are hazards everywhere – classic Dye. British Links style bunkers are to be avoided at all costs, as – obviously – are the water features that are prevalent on ten holes.

Add into the mix the Floridian wind, and it’s easy to see why these tiny Bermuda greens are so readily missed.

That is where a classy short game comes into its own, especially as the surfaces here and in the rest of the Florida Swing so far have been so fast and firm. Holding the greens from long-range approaches is as tough as it gets.

Hopefully, that sets the scene nicely for what should be a fantastic tournament this week. So, who makes the cut for our PLAYERS Championship sleeper shortlist?

THE PLAYERS Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

Matt Kuchar – 55/1 – When it plays at its most difficult, you always suspect that grinding veterans like Matt Kuchar will slowly but surely come to the fore.

T2 in his penultimate start at another course that takes no prisoners, Riviera, Kuchar has got the game to meet the Sawgrass test head-on, and that’s prove by his record at the layout: a winner in 2012, Kooch has also finished T3 and T13 at this stretch.

He may lack in length off the tee, but Kuchar more than makes up for it with his short game, which gives him the edge on many at Sawgrass.

Jason Day – 70/1 – Forgive our cynicism, but we’re taking Jason Day’s withdrawal from the Arnold Palmer with a pinch of salt.

The Aussie pulled this trick last year, blaming his back, and then went on to finish T8 at Sawgrass a week later.

In short, Day loves this track – 8-5-60-1 is the formline here, and he presumably wanted to give himself as much prep time as possible ahead of THE PLAYERS.

Beware the ‘injured’ golfer!

Joel Dahmen – 100/1 – A Bermuda specialist, Joel Dahmen has lurched back to form as the Tour has headed east.

Back-to-back top-fives at the Genesis and the Arnold Palmer set the scene nicely for a decent turn at Sawgrass, where he was T12 on his first trip last year.

Dahmen really does play tough courses well, especially when there is a wind, and he can be trusted to go nicely at a track that suits.

Scottie Scheffler – 110/1 – Ever since finishing T7 at the Greenbrier, Scottie Scheffler hasn’t looked back this season.

Six top-20s since, including solo third at the American Express and T5 at the RSM Classic, shows plenty of class and a particular fondness for playing in the wind.

His form has generally been better on Bermuda too, and he ranked top-10 for SG: Around-the-Green at Bay Hill – he’ll need that chipping ability to shine once more at Sawgrass.

Ian Poulter – 120/1 – Fresh from watching his old World Cup of Golf mucker Tyrrell Hatton win the API, Ian Poulter must have been inspired by what he saw.

The Englishman has been bubbling away recently without breaking through into something substantial, but he has a decent record at Sawgrass – he was T2 here in 2017 – and that could prove to be the spark.

One of the most reliable chippers in the game, Poulter should be in his element in Florida this week.
