UPDATE: PGA Championship Could Be Next Event Postponed
It seems as though every new day comes with new updates about the coronavirus and how it is affecting all of our lives. In the golf world, that means more events being canceled or postponed. Now, it looks like another Major is on the chopping block.
It was already announced just days ago that The Masters would be postponed to a later date to follow the CDC guidelines to prevent the further spread of coronavirus and Augusta National shut down all activities on the course indefinitely. That has left many fans wondering what that means for the rest of the PGA TOUR schedule, especially with the PGA Championship set to tee off at the beginning of May.
Rumors have already been swirling that the PGA Championship will also have to be postponed with the CDC stating that all mass gatherings and events will need to be canceled for the next eight weeks. Experts are also predicting that the peak of the outbreak could be around Easter at the earliest, meaning that quarantines could be in place well into May making it all more likely that golf’s second major will have to be rescheduled.
For the PGA TOUR’s part, however, they are still planning as if the tournament will take place. Jay Monahan stated a few days ago that “We are fully planning on proceeding with the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco,” Monahan said. “There is no plan at this point in time for the PGA Championship to be held [at TPC Sawgrass]. It’s going to be held at TPC Harding Park.”
As Monahan had mentioned, the idea was that the PGA Championship could move to TPC Sawgrass since San Francisco is going through strict quarantine procedures but that was shut down. Many things have changed since Monahan made that statement, and qualifiers for the tournament have already been canceled, which doesn’t bode well for the overall tournament’s future this year.
If the PGA Championship is postponed along with The Masters, it’s going to cause a big schedule crunch to try and fit both events in by the end of the season and may cause other smaller events to be canceled entirely. We’re all learning more every day so the best we can do is try to stay safe and hope that the golf world works everything out once the pandemic has passed.
