FROM THE BOOTH: Golf Broadcasts Are Getting More Interesting

This week’s tournament is going to be covered by both The Golf Channel and CBS but both groups plan on including some new features in their broadcast. First of all, both networks are making sure they follow social distancing guidelines. Jim Nantz is set to be in the media tower on the 18th green by himself. All other analysts will be working remotely from a studio in Orlando with just a few on course following players.

On top of that, the networks are hoping to add a few new features to their broadcast this week. One of the new features will include some players having microphones placed with them to catch some of their chatter on the course, similar to what we saw with the TaylorMade charity skins match. There is also expected to be small confidential interviews to be aired where players are asked unique questions to answer for all fans.

Nantz is someone who seems especially excited about the potential changes and getting back on the airwaves. “I think that can make a big difference,” Nantz said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the game. They have a chance to go before a sports-starved nation and create a wider audience. But we need the players’ help.”

One other thing to expect when you tune in to watch the Charles Schwab Challenge this week is that there will be mention of what is going on across the country. From the COVID-19 pandemic along with the protests that have been taking shape across the nation. Nantz in particular feels that it would be remiss to not address these major events so even with golf underway, expect to hear things about other issues going on in the world.

It’s going to be great to see golf finally back in action this week after all of this time and with these new changes coming to the TV broadcast, hopefully, we will finally be able to enjoy one of our favorite sports again.
